Upsetting. Charm city on the same dates at mtbnj cross dates. Vegas two weeks off from when I'll be in Vegas.

I'm bummed to see that Nationals are still in January. I would really like for them to go back to Dec. It is such a long season with mountain biking and cross.

CX has gotten nuts...starting in June? I thought cross was intended to be cold, wet, slippery and to occur late in the season. I think CX should start in October and run through February. Just my opinion.

The rest of the world puts their dates in the correct order. UCI is from Europe.

Bingo. Nittany Cross is September 6-7.

Charm City has been the 3rd weekend in September for as long as I've been racing. It's one of the pillars of mid-Atlantic cross. Did MTBNJ really schedule a cross race for the same weekend?

Yes, indeed we did. Or as Revered Lovejoy might say, yes with an if, no with an but.

The Short Story

The short story is that there is no good weekend for the Clinic + Horseshoe race and that this is the best one we could find. Charm is obviously a big draw but it is also nearly 200 miles away.

The Long Story

The longer story is that we had requested the weekend between Nittany and Charm and the NJBA said it would be no problem. Then the NJBA had a promoters meeting which we weren't aware of, and our date was taken by another promoter a few days later. Ok, ok, fine.

We were also given very credible information that Charm would be moved to October as per the UCI, so we chose the Charm date. Literally the day after we picked Sept 20/21, we were informed by the same credible source that Charm wasn't moving to October after all. I discussed it with said reliable source, and as mentioned above, it being 200 miles away means there really isn't all that much crossover in attendance.

Bottom Line

Bottom line is this:

1) lots more people race CX in September than in Dec and Dec is a shitty time to be organizing a race from both a volunteer and participant perspective
2) its better to have a beginner clinic near the start of the season
3) though Charm is certainly a big draw, lots of people don't want to drive 3+ hours for that race.
4) some people who might otherwise go to Charm might choose to stay in NJ to race
5) It's not ideal but it's the best we can do this year. Next year the plan may be different.

Having Said That

If anyone decides to go to Charm over us, I totally get it. I was given the insight into the calendar that is used to try to plan the CX season, and this didn't even include most of the NJ races as they don't announce as early as most promoters do. The thing looks like some sort of upper level Mensa matrix. It's flat-out impossible to find a free weekend. Every promoter knows this, which is why you see any promoter that does more than 2 races give up and just do 1-2 a year, because it's so hard to squeeze your race in.

If Charm had been moved, we only would have been up against 2 other semi-regional races, one in DC and one outside Philly. In the end, this is the best we could do.

Team MTBNJ has sent a delegation to Charm City the past couple of years and it has always been one of the best weekends of the year. Fun course, well run big-time event, huge fields, yada yada...

Having personally driven thousands of miles to go to CX races around the region, I totally understand the draw of big marquee events like Charm, Gloucester, Providence... If that's your bag or you have MAC series jersey aspirations, by all means go. Nobody will be offended. But the world needs local racing too.

Horseshoe Scramble is a different product & different market. The plan for the 2014 edition is pair a Saturday 'cross clinic with a Sunday race on the same course. As far as I know there's absolutely nothing like it in the the region. Our inagural beginner CX clinic was booked solid last year and we expect the same this year.

Down for this. Charm is too early (for me) in what's turning into a long-assed season. I'll do my traveling later, when the weather's horrible and all the summer superheros are home watching Sporza. Very excited to keep it local! Thanks, y'all.

Thanks MTBNJ for keeping local grass routes going! All good stuff. I have no idea what I will be doing come Sep, but I am sure the clinic will be a great NJ opportunity for many. 🙂

I would not travel for Charm. For horseshoe yes.

Is that code?

I have not yet achieved the level of Cross Magi. The thought of driving almost 3 hours and geting a hotel (possibly) for my 45 min race has a difficult fun to cost equation to solve. Now having Horseshoe available certainly provides for a much easier equation. Y'all know where I will be.
