2016 Singlespeed-A-Palooza Thread

34/17 for me....of course I have seen people win this race with a 35/15 and a 32/18....so whatever works for you.

I have to decide on my bike more than my gearing. I set up a 34:16 on my Sir9 to test ride this past weekend and was no faster riding that on a primarily singletrack trail than I was on 34:17, so I'd probably opt for 2:1. It's a higher cadence obviously, but I'm fine with that.

But my real decision is to go super light and rigid with the carbon bike at 36:18 or bring the heavier but more forgiving steel Sir9 at 34:17. I doubt I'll even make that call until Sunday morning. I hate riding rigid anymore (because I'm a puss) and in endurance races, it's a no-brainer for me to always use the Sir9. But it's hard to argue with how much faster the carbon bike feels. The only real disadvantage besides the rigid fork is that it has an after-market eccentric BB, which needs more attention than the Niner Bio II. But on a given ride, it's never caused me issues, so I think it's just all a question of rigid or not.

May I suggest full suspension...Take my SS scalpel for a spin....then we can set your rigid bike on fire 🙂

I geared myself in hopes of making most of the climbs and my legs surviving long enough to finish the race at my first SSaP. I'm more of a spinner than a masher anyway. Also rocking full rigid.

I'd have converted the FS, but I'm too lazy to convert it back for H2H Jungle and it's heavy as shit.

feels does not matter doe

But I feel so little in life in general that I think I should probably use them when they occur.

It's hard to actually tell if it's really faster or if my average speed on this bike is just higher because I ride it mostly on trails where suspension isn't needed (e.g., it's known as the "Pines Bike" among my friends because it's kind of the go to rig for winter riding in the most mind-numbingly unchanging place you can go.)

32:18 either way, but I'm with 1 speed on the lighter, rigid bike or the heavier squish bike debate. Utah has mostly convinced me to rock the FS as of last night. Have to do more testing on the setup but as of last night it was cool. Kinda wanted 34:something but I'll be running the bike 1x10 thereafter so didn't want to get multiple rings.

34 x 15 or go home..

Home it is then. 😉

is this a race or a ride? theres spots of the course that you can cancel out trying to "ride" and pick your gearing from there. I remember at Tymor SS people were talking about what gear to run on that large death climb. After some discussion with the crew, I realized I was never going to ride it anyway, so I removed it from my thought process and knew I was going to be hiking it. I did pretty good... that was a long time ago.

This place is relatively flat and extremely fast. I'll be working on my cx dismounts/remounts and hoping to be doing 20mph on the flats 😛

are you keeping your gear selection a secret? 44/12?

pretty much...I know there will be two spots where ill be jogging. Even with a 34-17...need to be right around 120rpm to get to 20mph....which feels awesome after like an hour of racing 🙂

32X19 for my first SSAP, i just want to finish and have fun. My only decisions is to lower my fork on my ROS9 from 130 to 120?

My SS is sitting in my basement without a stem. It's probably setup 32x20, although I have an 18 somewhere. It's got 2.1" tires on it, and I've been on 4.6" tires exclusively since Halloween. Sunday could be...interesting.

It's only a secret so all you 46/10 guys don't laugh at me.

I still have a bunch of stems if you have time to come up some day. If you do, let me know so I can consolidate.
