Agreed but we need suggestions on solutions not observations.

If 6MR can close the main trailheads in the freeze-thaw, why not Allaire? Both are administered by our great state. Obvi Allaire faces less total closures given the same weather based on general soil composition. Shut that focker down with a rope and hanging sign. I know, weak, and far from an ideal solution, but better than preaching to the choir and hoping.

Same shyte we debated for 6M applies: additional signage, friendly personal interaction with offenders at the trailheads, etc. etc.

We could just station @Mitch at Hospital Road to chase away the young wippersnappers and send them to Wharton.

Fair enough. Without ever interacting with them personally, I get the impression that 6M State management is more involved and hands on. Do you think, At Allaire, the reason it’s grown out of control so much is the laissez faire approach of the rangers to MTB in general - or is it better stewardship by riders At 6M?

I am in favor of a permanent sign at the Hospital road trailhead outlining general obvious rules; no riding in rain or immediately after, no trail modification, feature construction or fence jumping….Pairing that with a rope~ love it. It would at least curb the ignorant if not stop those who willingly know and disregard.
 
So any suggestions on what the sign would say? Important points? Ill have a local sign place in Red Bank make one up if the groups consensus is that its a good thing.

1. Do not ride trails in wet conditions, it causes significant damage
2. If water is encountered, ride straight through, do not widen trail
3. Winter riding is permitted only when ground is dry or frozen
4. No trail modification, short cut or jump/features are permitted without prior authorization.

A lot of it starts right here on this board. Allaire has a reputation of “draining well”, in my opinion this is because of the sandy soil and history of trails up to 2000 or so, which lacked a lot of the single track that is on site today. The newer trails simply cannot take the traffic when it is wet, there is only a small layer of organic matter above the sand, once it is gone you have the beach, hence why some members have been shoveling sand off the trails (in addition to erosion).

While many riders understand Six Mile is a no no in the rain, Allaire does not look as bad as Six Mile in comparison, I get it. That doesn’t mean you are not damaging the trails. In the long run the park will lose. Certain sections are pretty bad after years of this, parts of Tiger Woods, the River Trail, Glass. Real estate left is at minimum to reroute as most trails nearly touch each other in the park.

It has gotten better in the sense that people are not posting wet rides on Strava anymore or arguing conditions (well as much) but many users on this board are still riding in unacceptable conditions. I live right down the road from the park and see board members with their bikes riding and/or ready to ride on wet days. In addition I have been doing work in the park on these days when they ride by.

The board collectively got behind a push to not ride Six Mile when wet. Allaire needs this push, which would then hopefully grow. The volume of use to far too great now, and the damage is growing.

Will one ride cause havoc…..no. But the continued use and growth of riders doing so will create significant damage. Between this, rogue trail building and the amount of jumps being built the cycling community are not being good stewards.

Thinking out loud here again.

What about pick a typical freeze thaw Saturday or Sunday, and setup a table early in a spot near the kiosk? Hand out some preprinted “Don’t Ride Muddy Trails” and “Join JORBA” brochures, along with some smiles and friendly banter, to the jackholes sure to be overrunning the place with their mudbikes. Bring the edumacation right to the ignorant masses. In a good way.

I think we all know what the Hospital Rd. lot looks like every Sat & Sun; we’d be sure to be in front of the target audience at that point. A few volunteers could cover an hour or so at a time, and possibly enlighten a few of those that “don’t know $h!t about MTB.”
 
I think they may have signs like this already that I've seen. Can't remember where but maybe someone on here can find them.

Hi Geoff - glad your 1 post per year was again so positive.
You've been around long enough to know this happens every year around mud season.
There is no good solution. Sure the trails will survive. The noobs will eventually learn - or not.
i'm done being the trail police, yet ya never know when a decent idea will present, or someone will step-up
and actually do something - rather than just throw shade.
 
For years I was vocal trail cop until a 12 hour storm blew through in the fall of 2017 and did more trail damage than 5 years of mud riding, another storm hit in 2018 and was even worse.

After that I shut my mouth. I love allaire but it looks like hot garbage these days mostly from Mother Nature

We will never have 2016 trail conditions again

FWIW, I don't think signs are effective at all, been ignoring signs all my life.

Conversely, I am also not stupid enough to build stuff in a state park or lands easily accessible by a state park trail system. Build to your hearts content, just be like normal trails and build them illegal on private or some other land. Less people = less problems and groms are easier to address then self elected jackholes.
 
Yeah ok, my intention was to educate those that didnt know rather than police or convince those that have strong opinions, my bad. :shrug: Duly noted, ill put it on the list of things that cant be discussed without flaming, like religion, politics and vaccinations.

I am younger than you, so um. Yeah.

As for self elected/appointed, the park does not maintain the trails. JORBA and ATUG do. Some of us have been at it for 25 years with the park. So that takes care of “self appointed” thing given we are doing what the rangers have instructed us to.
