An open apology to CX riders.

Juggernaut

Master of the Metaphor
Being that SixMile is my home park, it’s really the only place I go often enough to be able to recognize the faces of regulars with any degree of accuracy. I, from time to time, would see Pearl and sometimes Capers riding their CX bikes at SixMile. To be honest, I thought they were NUTS! Yes, SixMile is not particularly technical. Yes, SixMile is fast and flowy, but why would you ever want to ride it on a CX bike? Not long ago MountainBikeMike rode his at SixMile and I guess it planted a seed in my head. Yesterday, a short window opened up to squeeze in a ride… so…. I rode SixMile on my CX bike.

Wow, was I wrong! This place is FANTASTIC on a cross bike. Even the ravine on red just before the field on the 27 side is no issue at all riding on the CX bike. The only issue I had, and that is more a reflection on ME than the bike, is I need to take care when going over some of the higher logs (cuz of the much larger chain ring on the CX bike). When I’m wrong, I’m wrong.

Thanks guys for the inspiration.

If I can cross over to CX / Road and Mandex, so can you!

This is a public service announcement brought to you by Mandex!

Dude - logs mean you practice your barrier technique.

I actually like fish tailing in the sand. It adds a sense of whimsy. Yes, I just said whimsy....😉

It helps line choice technique as well. I rode my CX at 6 and instead of just rolling over things on my 29er I actually had to look for a smoother line. The blue field is excellent on the CX bike

Good point. I actually found myself subconsciously practicing my turn approach angles more than I ever would have consciously done so on my 29er.

I have ridden my cx at tourne, it is much more versatile than you think. hartshorne fire roads, huber, etc.

I've heard of people riding CX at Ringwood. Riding a CX bike on trails is a different beast than "The True Cost of Racing Cyclocross - By the Numbers" 😀

In all seriousness, the CX bike has opened up a whole new realm of exploration possibilities to/for me. I would never have tried them if I hadn't seen you guys out there doing it first, so thanks. 🙂
