Another "wire across the trail" incident at Jungle Habitat

Perhaps you've heard the saying "idle hands become the devil's playground". In Jungle Habitat, since we still have a lot of fencing, wiring and remnants of the safari theme park scattered about, and apparently people with too much free time around, we have another act of vandalism to report and a troublemaker in the area.

Sometime on Sunday the 18th of December, about mid-afternoon, someone removed some electric wire from the baboon enclosure and wound both ends around the base of 2 birches and stretched it across the trail. It was about mid calf high this time so it wasn't as treacherous as a previous occurrence in Jan 2011 (where an ATVer was clothes-lined), but its an event that has the attention of the Park Police and the Superintendent of Ringwood.

The location of the wire was at the top of "Boon" as you start climbing around to the right towards the summit. As you go towards an cut in the baboon enclosure, you will see some tight birches. The wire was tied there about 10-15 feet before the cut in the fence.

As of today, JORBA volunteers have removed the wire and cleared the area of any other wire.

This was a dangerous and a criminal act. If anyone has any information on the person who did this, please call the NJ State Park Police at 877-927-6337 or http://www.nj.gov/dep/njstateparkpolice/index.htm. Any help you can provide may prevent these incidents in the future and allow our users to enjoy the park.

Our parks are public recreation and should be safe. This behavior will not be tolerated and I am assured if persons responsible are found, they'll be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

As always, you can contact a JORBA Representative if you're unsure or just want to report a problem with a trail we maintain. Park contacts can be found on each park page here on www.JORBA.org.

I DO NOT "LIKE" this....It's scary to hear about incidents such as this taking place. It's good to hear that no one was injured as result of someone's cowardly attempt to hurt an unknowing trail user.

Unfortunately it's so hard to catch individuals who choose to sabotage trails in this manner!

It would be nice to read, just once, about someone getting caught red-handed!

Someone could have really been hurt...

Please contact JORBA first, especially for Jungle Habitat. I can't stress this enough, please contact Jeff or Dave before you contact any park officials or police. I think the email is jungle@jorba.org.

Again, please contact Jeff or Dave first. Park police will most likely close the park to mountain bikers.

If we were to run across a "sabotage" such as this, ourselves, who should our primary contact be? God forbid it actually bids us harm, but what is the course of action?

Remove it? Leave it intact until we can contact authorities as evidence? Take a picture or two, and remove it, to spare anyone else who may come by?

Sorry for the questions. Just de-winterized my bikes, and I primarily ride at JH, solo. If anyone's unlucky enough to be running into any more of this crap, it'll be me.

Follow Bleeders advice in the previous post. I rode there alone Friday night and was thinking about this. Keep riding, just be aware.

Look, don't endanger yourself or other riders. If you are harmed or in case of emergency, contact police or 911. If you can safely mark it or remove it if it poses a hazard to the next rider, please do so. If you can document it with photos or GPS coordinates etc. Please do so and let us know. jungle@jorba.org Jeff, Dave and I are local and we can get there quickly. Assuming you weren't harmed and the immediate danger is removed it would be best to contact us and let us contact park management.

Tossed the e-mail into my contacts on my phone. I figured if I was seriously injured that the only thing on my mind would be self-preservation.

I was more worried about getting the park shut down by contacting the wrong people in a less serious matter. Thanks. 🙂
