PA Bike packing take 2 :

Came up with new routes in Bald Eagle State Forest and wisely pre-reserved the two campsites:

Day 1 drive out plus 40 mile biking
Day 2 60 mile biking
Day 3 30 mile biking

Got hammered by expected Day1 rains.
Unexpected 90 minute hike-a-bike thru unrideable trail. 37 miles 4800ft of climbing ( all gravel )

Day 2 perfect weather and relaxed start to the day.
Hike-a-bike to nowhere had to bail and bushwack to the quad trail that I should have been on. Gaia GPS downloaded maps stopped short of my RothRock campsite and with six miles to go road was gated and marked as closed. Another big hike-a-bike up Thickhead Mtn ( fitting ) and a very bouncy four mile descent. 64 miles, 6300ft of climbing ( 99% gravel )

Day 3 more perfect weather and an easy return to the car that was 70% gravel and more down than up. 30 miles 2400ft of climbing

Gear/food/bike/water filtration worked perfectly. Should have used my headnet on the climbs as gnats were all over the face/glasses etc

Struggling all summer with worse than usual foot pain.

On multiple occasions had sports med or podiatrist diagnose me Morton’s Neuroma and advise to ease off rather than attempt surgery.

Decided to see an MD specialist and he does not think the Neuromas are the problem. Idiopathic Peripheral Neuropathy is the new diagnosis. ( on top of Tibial Neuropathy from being hit by Camry )

Round 2 with Neurologists scheduled for end of September but I’m unhappy with the lack of treatment options if that is the case.

Anyone have experience with peripheral neuropathy?

I had a bout of numbness and tingling in my extremities a few years back that my primary care physician thought was likely peripheral neuropathy. He seemed annoyingly unconcerned, as if this is just a standard thing that everyone deals with.

I am biased, as the husband of a PT, but my wife put me in touch with a PT in NYC who deals with a lot of nerve inflammation type issues. That definitely seemed to help and my symptoms did ultimately resolve. I'm happy to pass along her contact info if you think that might be at all helpful.

thanks I may take you up on that reference if my second visit to neurologist does not work out. I will get the EGM test on my right foot ( left foot does already have severed nerve from being hit by car ) and potentially a biopsy as well to examine nerve cells for damage. For the past ten years I have been trying to manage it as if it were a neuroma with less and less success. Don’t think it’s gonna get better any time soon but…🤞🤞

More PA bikepacking. Further west, four hour drive each way so I stuck with the 40 mile, 60 mile, 30 mile schedule. Reserved two State Forest remote campsites in advance.

Parked across from the local PD in a sketchy town Renovo. Almost immediately things went to shit worst 1.5 mile Hike-a-Bike ever, brutal terrain overgrown and all loose rock. Next ‘road’ was worst-est-er. 2.5 miles of blowdowns and rough rough going. Both Garmin Nav and iphone GIA GPS app ( with downloaded maps ) freaked out and did not match up with reality. Absolute threshold workout got super beat up and emerging from the woods was ready to bike back to the car and drive home.

Regrouped and decided my planned routes which were quite difficult on paper will be impossible if I need to walk and carry my bike. So I was able to find a more level route that was a mix of paved and gravel to get to my campsite which was really really nice one.

Took zero pictures of the nasty stuff as I was in fight or flight mode.

Day 2 : After ten hours of sleep I decided to toss my day two route as i could easily become stranded in the middle of nowhere without any cell service. And frankly even without ANY hike-a-bike would be at my limit. Winged a more direct route that took out 20 miles and the most rugged climbing. Had a great day 👌 weather again was perfection.
