why? oh why.....

Took the 150 Axum to HM today.

Feel free to add "no surprise here" at the end of any sentence where applicable.

Firstly... blown upper headset bearing... reason for why this bike didn't like to change direction. Placed an order for the bearing but won't be here for 2 weeks... 🙁

Even with the 150 fork, this is an XC bike.... but with a more comfortable riding position. I usually use about 100mm of travel on the fork on any of my other bikes (RDO not included) but on the Axum, I used about 130mm of travel on the Reba. At one point, I had the same Reba with same air pressure on the Ragley and didn't use more than 100mm at HM. I am assuming its that XC geo. Had to close the compression 2 clicks.

There were couple of instances where the front slipped... not sure if its the Hans Dampf or the bike. Even with the 150 fork... the bike climbs pretty well. On the rock garden where I would typically plow through on the Ragley... I didn't have the guts to do the same on the Axum. On the technical downs, if it wasn't for the dropper, not sure I would have been able to. It reminded me of the time when I had the Giant Talon, @liong71er had his legs over it and said this bike was scary. I think it was the same feeling I had on the Axum.

It seems like I am saying a lot of negatives about the Axum but in actuality... its far from the truth. I mean it is HM and I doubt anyone would buy an Axum with the intent to ride it at HM. I think the bike, the way it is currently set up, would be fun at places like 6MR and the likes. The bike climbs well... its stiff and pedals pretty good. It's comfortable and I think its a terrific winter beater where you would ride slowly with more caution when the trail conditions aren't that great.

If you can get the bike for $250.... sell off the OE parts for $150... and you have a full parts bin... highly recommend as a winter beater lol 😛

Steerer tube extender on the Marley
It's the compression plug type that gave me another 30mm. Seems solid... hope I don't lose any teeth. Also have a 50 rise bar on the way in case the extender doesn't work out.

I think I am going to Installed the recently acquired GX on the Marley and move the MS AventX to the Axum. Box 9 Prime 2 will go on sale.
