cassette wobble

After a ride at mooch today i noticed that there was some play in my rear wheel. It seems that i may have bent the area right between the rim and the cassette. It seems more loose then bent in one specific spot. I've never taken one apart but i was wondering if i could tighten it down in any way or if im just waiting for it to break. I do have a spare rear rim with cassette but it's 7 gears n my current is an 8( both shimano's) Could i use it if i adjusted the limit screws properly? i"d appreciate any input.

you can usually adjust your derailleur to work for 7 speeds instead of 8, especially if they're both the same co. the only thing you can tighten w/o taking anything appart is the cassette, which doesnt sound like the it'll fix your problem. usually when they're play in the whole wheel it's either loose axel bolts, or (for rear wheels) a freewheel loose from the hub.

the way it works is there's either freewheels (with gears) that screw directly to threads on the hub; or cassettes that slide on the freewheel which is screwed on the hub from the inside, which is the problem i always had with my last bike, so i have plenty of experience w/rear hubs now! lol

is the cassette loose from the hub itself? if so it's probably the 2nd one, if not it's the first one.

Maybe it needs to be tightened again. Or the rear hub may need service...
Happen to me with my old set of wheels. Bring it to a shop...

i managed to tighten down the bolts. Had to back it off a half turn after i did cause it was affecting the spin. it did resolve most of the wobble. its still off canter by a little but i thinks that a small bend in the bolt. thanks for the input it was helpful🙂
