Central Jersey Nooblet Here...

Hey everyone! Name's Dee and I just recently got back into wanting to MTB. Used to as a kid and teen, but "real life" got in the way. Went for a hike at 6mi a few weeks ago and was bit again by the biking bug. I am waaaay outta shape (cardio and weight wise), so biking hopefully will make a positive impact in my life. As of now, I do maybe 6 miles in a half an hour at the gym. I'm saving up for a new bike because my Target Schwinn is NOT hitting the trails at all. Looking at a Trek 3900 Disc as my first "real" bike since the 90s. I'm looking forward to meeting some of you guys at a future ride. 😀

Welcome back to the fun! 6 mr is a popular park, i'm sure you'll run in to a bunch of us there. I'm sure someone here is familiar w/ the Trek you are looking at and can weigh in but it is very smart of you to leave the Schwinn at home. Ride as much as you can and you will be back in shape in no time.

Welcome D... so are you like a smallish noob? 😀
definitely get yourself a decent bike and then ride the heck out of it!

I like the sound of nooblet. I'm not smallish by any means. At least for a girl. I'm 5'7" and most people say that's tall for a girl. :hmmm:

Ha! awesome... I'm 5 8' so I'm a giant.. for a girl. but I'm a guy so I'm really short. 🙂 Get some good riding under your belt on a good bike and cmon over to Allamuchy. And also check out Jorbafest

welcome back to the madness...check out the tuesday night rides down at allaire and as Glenlivet12 said ride it like you stole it...
keep an eye on the rides section as we do post our rides there.
hope to see you on the trails

I recently picked up this bike for my wife:

She likes it a lot, except for when i ask her to ride round valley 😱 It was a little more expensive then you had initially said you wanted to spend, but she will grow into it. It's a good starter bike.

Hey everyone! I am waaaay outta shape (cardio and weight wise), so biking hopefully will make a positive impact in my life. 😀

Welcome aboard. I think there are tons of people that came into this here with this same hope and can attest that this works. Start easy so you don't get discouraged, meet some people in a similar place as you, make it a part of your routine and concentrate on having fun and everything else will happen while you aren't looking. Good luck!

Welcome...I just got my bike back in April for the same reasons; the bug & the fitness. I took my bike out every day (when weather permitted,) my cardio is pretty sweet now, I've lost my little beer podge and best of all, I'm starting to have some real fun on the trails. I ride 6MR a lot because it's right down the street from me, so hopefully I'll see you around.

I'm definitely going to hit up JORBAfest. Seems like a lot of good fun. 🙂
Great. There are novice and all girl rides led by some great folks so do take advantage of that. There will be at least 3 bike manufacturers there (Giant, Trek, Jamis) with bikes you can demo so you can try a couple of them out before you buy. Just make sure you have your drivers license and a pair of pedals.

Welcome back.As some have stated, start out easy.I used to get so frustated at Allumuchy on the hills that I would throw my bike 20 feet into the woods(as if it was the bikes fault),lol.Six mile is the perfect starting area.Chimney rock would be a great test/2nd step to check out your technical prowess with all the roots and rocks.Exploring Allumuchy would be advised with a guide or two. You'll sill get lost there your first time by yourself. But isn't the adventure what it's all about anyway?

I really like that TREK Skye you posted...a bit out of my price range though...I wanna have enough money for a new helmet and a toolkit and such. I am an upgrade freak and like to do work on my own so I guess I can forego the disc brakes to save money. What do u guys think?

Welcome 🙂

I can't weigh in on the bike because I'm a Cannondale and 29er koolaid drinkin' gal, but good luck with whatever bike you decide to go with. You'll be back in shape and having fun out there in no time. If you are looking to meet other folks in an easy paced setting you may want to check out the Tuesday night Allaire beginner rides. They get a good crew and you'll find a lot of "non-beginners" will show up for the fun as well. I hope to see you out on the trails 🙂

i went the cheaper route on my first bike and ended up buying a new one 2 weeks later, after spending over 4k on bikes 3 months ago i ended up upgrading most of the components on my new bike anywayl, i upgraded the shifters to x9, i got new continental diesel tires, avid elixir disc brakes, a specialized avatar seat(total of upgrades = 600$), so saving a few bucks in the beginning is cool if you know you will be content with your setup for a while as upgrades are very costly, converting v brakes to disc is very expensive and deciding you want something better 2 months into ownership can get even more expensive so get your self the trek credit 12months no intrest and go crazy, but before you drop a dime do a lot of test rides to see what's the best fit for ya, you can do lots of test riding at Jorba fest. Best of luck.
