Custom wheel building

gonna have the LBS build a set of wheels for me....

I think I'm going with Stan's rims (ATR Arch or Flow, not sure which one).

The real question is... which hubs? If I had all the money in the world (or not paying a mortgage)... probably would be DT Swiss 240's.. I heard mixed reviews on Stan's hubs... Hope? American Classic?

...and are bladed spokes bling?

I am guessing you are building a mtb wheelset. bladed spokes are mostly for road (from my experience). I had good luck with DT Swiss Comp spokes with my build. Hubs are up to you, anything in that price range (hope, etc) will be nice.

Flows are nice since they are wider and allow you to get a little more out of the high volume tires.

As for hubs you can't go wrong with Hopes as a compromise between value and function. They are simple, solid, and get the job done.

Stan's hubs lack the bling factor but they are light, easy to service, cheap and reliable. Dont get bladed spokes.

Hope hubs, Arch rims & DT Super Comp spokes are still working great for me after 2 years of abuse.
My only regret is going with alloy nipples, as I've popped a few of them. Go brass or buy plenty of spare alloys. (And spare spokes too.)

Found this link posted on another thread to be helpful in determining hubs.

I'm also working on changing my set for the spring.

I've found these on wiggle.com...little cheaper then getting them custom built ($421 with free shipping)...they come straight from the factory. I haven't read any bad feedback but bikeradar.com gave it good reviews. Problem is i can't get them with red hubs, black is the only choice.

Not sure how you feel about mavics...but this is also a very good price for this set.

My chiropractor was about to sell me his Mavic SS Crossmax 29er....(retails about $770), but it worked with his new fork

stopped by the LBS (marty's randolph) during lunch.

SRAM X.9 hubs (Quick release) are ridiculously cheap. (less than $100 for the rear)... there is gotta be a downside to it, right?

I think Stan's Arch 29er (black), SRAM x.9 hubs, and regular DT Swiss 2.0mm spokes (probably black also).... and gold nipples....

Another Hope vote right here. I have them, my friends have them, and my friend's friends have them. They last forever!

Wait 2 weeks.. They are revising the Arch. The new version is lighter and wider.

That's good to know. building a wheel or two is one thing I want to try this year. I was thinking with arch. I scored a hope pro II front hub a couple month ago. I need to get a rear hub still.
