Custom wheel building

My 2 cents on wheels and hubs...
I'm running Stan's Flows with Stan's hubs for two seasons. Never had any issues. Easy to service and very reliable. I like them o much that I'm buying another wheel-set for my new bike.
Also I like the fact that for price of one expensive hub I have one light reliable wheel-set.

Cool thing about stans hubs they have very low resistance and spin forever on the stand 🙂

rims

OK..

SO maybe someone can school me on the benefits to new rims and Hubs. I mean i can understand the weight and rolling resistance and all, but Im just trying to figure out if its worth it for me to look into a new set for my bike.. I am riding a trek Top fuel, and have a background in MX. So yes I like jumps but also plan on doing some 40, 50 and 60 mile races this year.. Im also not looking to drop a ton of cash as well .. Oh and I am still running tubes for simplicity

Thanks

Stan's + tubeless = simplicity

It doesn't hurt to have an extra set of wheels. They will not last forever; especially if you are pushing that ride to it's limit. I have wheels I ride with and wheels I race with. Mainly because I don't want to put as many miles on the race setup and keep the tires fresh. For the endurance stuff I like using the Maxxis tires with EXO technology - better side wall protection. I will likely be investing in a new set of Stan's wheels; just can't beat the price to performance ratio.

did stan's build your wheels or did you have them build locally? i have read some horror stories on mtbr about their build quality.

this. unless you don't add more stans. then it = flats.

I've had a Stans built wheelset on my singlespeed for a while now(Hope to Stans rims). Round and true, and haven't turned a spoke nipple on them yet. Did I get lucky? I dont know.

I also have Stans built wheels on my singlespeed, and I have had zero problems.

on the contrary... I've seen my friends blow up their wheelsets from stans a couple of times. Just trying to make ur lives harder

On the MTB, I stayed away from hand built wheels because of the problems I had in the past. Jdog built a wheel with a flow rim for the rear and it changed my mind. Stood up to trail riding and dirt jumping.

It's all about who's building the wheels, I have a guy at my old shop that is Jedi-like. Tipping in the mech's fav beer is a plus, I'll be bringing a 12 pack of Victory Storm King when I pick my new wheels.

Is there any other way, this is how I have been payed in the past 😎

I have 3 sets of stans wheels all built by them and the only issues I've ever had was 2 separate incidents of a spoke breaking but that was due to a rear der problem. The second of these 2 was iggys fault cause I was riding with him.
