I took a cruise up to the old hood in Point Pleasant with my fat bike, for the most part I have not ridden that area and Allaire for a year or so.
To cut to the chase, on the Manasquan Bike path I got passed by two electric scooters that had to be doing 30mph + as I was doing 14mph and they FLEW by me. I was impressed with how fast these things go, but then watched a runner with headphones on almost get impaled by the thing and it’s 250lb rider.
When I got up to Allaire there was a group with e-bikes. Two were the type that you would use to get around town, three others were fitted with DH bike suspension and wheels that looked like they came off a competitive 50cc motorcycle - the riders were kitted in full mx gear. They looked like a 50cc racing bikes.
Both places had signs posted noted “no motorized vehicles”
I didn’t say anything to anyone because I frankly do not have the energy anymore and wtf am I too. My worry is more in the area of this: at the speeds these things move accidents are waiting to happen. I ride moto, but am in no way shape or form looking out for something that moves that fast and makes no noise on a bike path. Same for Allaire.
I will also note, as I get older or if I get hurt and can’t ride as well I am sure I will buy one. But it will be interesting to see how the law looks at e-bikes in the years to come.
