Specifically e-bikes, more specifically cheap e-bikes?

Specialized doesn’t make a cheap e-bike, this is an all e-bikes thing. The Globe is the only bike that meets the new UL Standard ATM. Not sure what, if any, enforcement there will be because NYC is shit show on the best of days.

Sounds kind of crazy, I guess that if my wife were to ride her e-bike converted by me diamondback to NYC she would be shot on sight…

Can there be a separate, amusing thread about Oscar Madison and Felix Unger, or should I say Max Goldman and John Gustafson?

Respectfully disagree. Some of the news is slanted, some not so much. I read every page of the indictment story this morning. I love the part of the indictment where tRUMP tells Pence that he's too honest. Of course SLIK RICK and Leo never read it, cuz facts=Kryptonite to some deplorables.

The editorial page is off the hook, doe. It's like a MAGA/Klan meeting over there.
What does any of this have to do with the E-Bikes & E-Scooters killing people in NYC? You guys can hardly stay on topic.

I think we should switch back to e-bike talk, or @mattybfat may throw a fit when this thread is locked...

BTW, I don't have a college degree so your question fall on deaf hears with me. Not that I value Hannity or any other conservative commentator much more than the gazillion of counterparts they have on the liberal media, I understand personal views but when you claim something that I know for a fact is wrong due to direct experience that's where I draw the line. And the whole bunch, left and right, have done that multiple times. At the end of the day I don't need to read the temperature listed on the newspaper to know if it's cold or hot (which I had to point out to an idiot colleague of mine when I first moved to the US after he complained about the weather on the news was always in F degrees, but he was an idiot as previously stated...).
Pat or Norm will toss the posts in the garbage heap.

Every Battery is a bomb, the size and power is dependent on the battery size and amount of energy stored. Ever see a Tesla burn, there is a reason all fire fighters are now required e car/ hybrid car fire training. Back in the 60’s, there was a “big” scare around the VW Bug. They had magnesium crank cases and when a bug burned it would get hot enough burn the crank cases and water is useless against a magnesium fire. Soooo, that’s great bug scare was blown all out of proportion by the media, of course the big 3 automakers helped push the Bug scare with their huge PR budgets.

What’s the point of all this? Who is pushing the e bike fire story’s out there? That is the real question.

Did a ride today that started at the Clay Pit. Rode Huber then the road thru Rumson, up Ocean Ave and around Atlantic Highlands and Hartshorne. At least 60-70% of all the bikes I saw were E-bikes.

By the time Trump gets out of jail the majority of bikes sold will be E-bikes.

That first sentence is what an engineer who worked Li-on battery research told me five years ago.

I don't think the four people who died in Manhattan last month were part of a conspiracy. That's the real answer.

71 people have died in Tesla fires…. That is out of 212 total fires….. not in the news.

The E-bike fires seem more reported because it's local news. I doubt it's all over the news in the mid west. If those Tesla fires were local, we'd see that all over the TV too.

Can you share the source of this? I Googled and various sites came up that weren't NHTSA or gov. I'd like to know more about this, thanks.

Fake news i.e. out of context. Here's the pertinent data:

"Researchers from insurance deal site Auto Insurance EZ compiled sales and accident data from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics and the National Transportation Safety Board. The site found that hybrid vehicles had the most fires per 100,000 sales at 3474.5. There were 1529.9 fires per 100k for gas vehicles and just 25.1 fires per 100k sales for electric vehicles."

Sorry, got the total fire wrong, it was 204, not 212….. the 212 was from another site.

On an e bike note, I have a 2022 specialized Kenevo and I am looking at maybe going to a proper 27.5 plus wheel and tire setup. The bike comes with 27.5 x 2.6 tires on 29 mm Iw rims. One of the issues with 2.6 tires is the alway seem to be mounted on rims that are to skinny, this makes the “squirm” under load. I am thinking about getting some 40 mm IW rims. I was wondering if anyone has tried this on a Kenevo on here.

Many of those look like bad behavior driving accidents (too fast, DUI). There were some which were more like what I was looking for; parked cars and minor accidents hitting the battery packs. I don't know the percentage or ratio of how many ICE accidents hit the gas tank and cause fires, so I don't know if the odds are equal.
Thanks.
Other than cheap made ebikes, I have not heard of any major brand (Trek, Pivot etc) that have had fires.

A friend told me firefighters in Belgium drop burning EV’s in open-top shipping containers filled with water. These containers are placed around the city.

I don’t e-bike. I’m old and still enjoy the grind, especially pedaling up hills and challenging obstacles (that throw you if you don’t make it). My Otso fat bike is perfect for me but I would not want any more weight. If I had a safe (roadway) commute I would get a pedal assist cargo bike in a second.

The pedal assist cargo bikes are getting pretty popular where I am. It's pretty awesome seeing people taking their 1 or 2 kids to school on the cargo bike.

We have a decent bike path that goes through town but once the new 30 mile bike path here gets finished between my town and the nearby one I'm sure there will be way more E-Bike commuters. Much better than sitting in traffic.

JTBC, when I posted (#2468 6/25/23) the article above about the 4 senior citizens killed in a fire caused by ebike batteries, I got some indecipherable reply about gaslighting from Matty and some conspiracy theory baiting from Leo. So, I let it go.

The second time, not so much. This is the MAGAt approach---start culture wars, then whine about it when someone responds.

Note that Leo still hasn't responded about Hannity's college degree.
too much to unpack here. I'm just going to block you and my life will be better. Suggest you do the same
