I'll bite and you'll be hearing more then you like from me if it goes the way I think it will.
Common thing I hear over and over, e-mtbing makes mountain biking even funnier! Who doesn't like funnier.
Another common thing I hear is your a cheater or lazy. This couldn't be further from the truth from everything I've read. I have seen enough back to backs that prove that myth wrong.
E-bikes from what I am researching are not evolving yearly or even monthly, they are evolving daily. The fight against will be mute in just a short few years. I suspect what you saw on the trails last year will be 4 fold this year and so on.
I’ve said this before and I find that it’s really true: most haters of ebikes have never done a real ride on one. This means a multi hour, fully committed ride.
A real group ride with others on similar bikes will typically result in an average HR within 10% of an old fashioned 😛pedal bike. I know a very fit rider who did this test and his HR and average power numbers were higher on the ebike btw.
One telling thing about the boom in ebikes is that bike companies are beginning to warn shop buyers to carefully consider what they stock at the high end. What this means is that sales of high end pedal bikes are indeed being supplanted by ebikes.
I have a close friend who owns a very big shop on the west coast. He just told me that he has ordered Over $1,000,000 (at WS) in the Orbea rise for the 22 Model year. Typically trends in the west coast hit us 3-5 years later.
I’m now on the 5th ebike I’ve owned. It’s not the only bike I ride, but I do ride one at least a couple times a month If I’m short on time, trail building, feeling less than 100% or if I’m headed out on a group ride with a bunch of e-dorks, I’ll ride the ebike.
One of my favorite ebike haters is a DH guy who rides a chairlift more than anyone I know. The irony that is totally lost on him that he is as much (likely more ) a “cheater” than any ebike rider.
Now how do ebikes help tech development for analog bikes?? Well, these 50 lb bikes need stronger wheels, tires, brakes, drivetrain and suspension. As these needs for tougher components are addressed, all riders will benefit. So even if you aren’t a ebike rider, you will certainly (and have already) gained from the existing ebikes.
