Going Long and Hard.

Feeling the weekend worth of fixed gear miles today. The transition back to this bike usually makes odd parts of my legs hurt, not so much the stomping on a big gear, but the slowing the bike down part. Kinda like how hiking downhill hurts more than climbing. Anywho, grateful to have a recovery day today…

Commute over the Rock. I have a couple weeks before Base Season starts so I just wanna wake up some of the less used leg parts. This bike does that. We were trying to come up with a conversion for Fixed vs Geared mileage today. I want to say doing 75-Miles Fixed is equivalent to 100-Miles Geared? I guess I could swap my PowerLinks and actually measure the TSS between the two but that’s a little too dorky…

I'm always amazed to see this setup as fixed gearing. So how many rpms are you doing when cranking downhill at +40mph? Also trying to stop with only a front brake and a rear tire. How's that work with in high speeds?

I’m not really paying attention to where I max out on this bike but at 40mph you’re at 150rpm or so with this gearing. I’m comfortable up to about 130 and it starts to fall apart quickly above that. You don’t really use the brake as hard as you’d think.

Where it’s annoying is a long 5% downhill where you’re sort of topped out cadence wise and everyone else is coasting.

Reeby test ride at Six Mile.

Somehow this ghetto AF 50mm Reba conversion actually works? The bike sits exactly the same, geo is exactly the same. How? IDK. But it works!! It could use a more responsive small bump air assembly like the blue debonair but that doesn’t fit in this fork. I like it enough that I’m probably gonna use part of my SRAM allowance on a Rudy being I’m good with group sets at the moment…

Also, 4-piston calipers on Rival is so good. The standard caliper really doesn’t do a lot of good when it gets rough.

What calipers did you put on?

They’re only G2Rs but on a road bike that’s a lot of brake.
I want to put a 4 piston caliper on the front of my Evo. It’s got 2 piston Level Ultimates on now and they’re light but not much power. Any recommendation on which SRAM caliper I should use?

Easiest swap would be the Level 4-Piston caliper. It’s basically a lighter G2. Unless you’re really talking about upgrading the brake and then we’d be talking Code but that might be a bit much for an XC bike.

Black Watts AM:Watts Beach Ride.

Hit the Am watts ride this morning with the boys. Sandy Hook to Seaside and back, 80-Miles.

Hit the front with Damon fairly early in the ride to help establish the A Group. After 20 miles, the group was down to a manageable 8.

After refilling our bottles, the second group caught up and sat in to eat lunch.

Our front group left about 15-minutes early and they put me on the front again. When it was my turn to sit at the back I got caught at the tail end of a red light and had to stop.

Me and 1 other guy swapped back and forth for what seemed like an eternity trying to catch back on to no avail.

In Belmar the guy I was with almost got sideswiped by a car pulling into a spot with no blinker. He turned with the car and grabbed the door handle so he wouldn’t go down. We cursed the shit out of the guy and banged in his car and shit but he was just a fucktard Benny.

A few miles down the road we caught the front group because someone ran into the back of someone else and broke their front rotor. We stopped at 7-11 and waited for everyone and fully regrouped except for 3 who were still off the front.

We rode safely in a group through Asbury and such because there was a shit ton of traffic.

Once we hit the last 7 or so miles and were against the Sea Wall I launched a suicide mission to sprint into Sandy Hook, 1 guy took the bait and we bled through our eyeballs for like 15 minutes 😳

I don’t really have that short attack power so it sucked so bad and I instantly regretted it, but we put 5 minutes or so into the group so it worked.

No PRs or anything because I set those during the Cranbury 200k, but still enough of an effort.

Looking forward to Base Season.

Wonder how many people still stop for a pic at the store on any given day. Despite loving the movie I don't recall ever actually stopping to get out. I know I've driven by it once or twice...
