IGVENTURE

Hey its Friday again. We should savor this slower, colder time of year while its hear, I know everyone be like...damn only x amount of days till Memorial Day. I like the summer but winter is also nice, things are slower at work...I am busy doing mechanical stuff, keeping busy at work makes the day go faster...but I'm not hectic busy which means less stress. Yeah its cold but so what, I can still ride my bike. Winter bike rides are fun and social, I like training for races when its warmer but the change of pace that colder weather brings is welcomed. It feels good to meet people and ride for a few hours when its cold out, its kinda provides me with a sense of accomplishment...like I ain't gonna let the weather dictate when I'm gonna mtb, I Win!

Last Friday night I met @capedoc in Brooklyn to see Wilco. Mary and I took trains and subways, Capers and Megan drove in. The Kings Theater is only 26 miles from my house but there are bridges and tunnels involved and given its proximity to NY, it blows to get to. Driving would have been faster but I was intrigued with the idea of taking trains and subways, plus you can drink while en-route which adds to the adventure. So, I took the train from Linden>Penn Station Newark>Path to WTC>walk to Fulton St(10min.)>subway to Beverly ave Brooklyn>walk to restaurant(15 Min.)

The travel time was about 2hrs, not being a daily commuter into NYC, this did not bother me. The trains were not crowed in the direction we were going and all connections were smooth + beerz. The walk from the subway to restaurant was kinda scary, I felt safe but Mary did not. I grew up in a town with a mixed racial population, that and when I find myself in mixed company I always default to Richard Pryor getting bad walk.

Before long we stumbled upon Mimmi's restaurant and cozied up with Capers and Megan. This was a nice intimate place to eat, the food was good and more beerz. We killed about an hour + here then walked to the theater, Mary felt safer with more people, so I didn't have to get bad yo.

It felt like I was back in college hanging with Heady Nugz and Megason before the show, we had time to kill some more beerz in the lobby with capers uncle and aunt. We got stoopider, Mary was buying these 24 oz beers and taking like 3 sips while I finished the rest. The lights started flickering so we took our seats, we split up since our seats were not together.

Mary and I did the Iggy Upgrade, thats when you ignore what your ticket says and sit as close as you possible can to the stage. We grabbed like 8th row seats and got kicked out in 15 minutes when the seat holders showed up, after this happened a few times( the show was sold out) we decided to sit in out real seats which were good seats too. The show was really good, the band was a well oiled machine. They had been playing this set list for about a month so they had it down, Jeff Tweedy did not talk much but the audience was into the show from the minute they walked on stage. Usually the crowd doesn't stand until about 10-15 minutes into the set, people were on their feet and singing from the get go. This was my first time seeing Wilco, Jeff Tweedy is one of those performers with a cult like following...he doesn't say much but the audience responds to his music. As I was listening to the music taking it all in, my revelation was that Wilco is Radiohead with talent. Jeff Tweedy is such a good vocalist and songwriter, his new album continues to be quality and remains fresh despite years of being at it. Overall it was a great night with the crew at a very entertaining show. Finally the last song they played was David Bowies, Space Oddity. Its tough to feel the vibe in the room from this video but this was the highlight of the night imo. It blew me away.

Driving in and out of Brooklyn was surprisingly easy and stress free, minus the tolls. We considered heading up to NYC during the day and hanging out in the city but the thought of all those trains just seemed daunting.

Hanging out with Iggy and Mary outside of cycling-related activities was fun. We should do it again sometime.

Wilco will be at the Mann in Philly in June BTW.

I have been keeping my eye on Lapland Lake. Snow conditions are usually better given the lake effect snow, they have an 8" base now which is more then most places. I have never been there but its on my xc ski radar of places to ski. I'm planning a get away at the end of this month, by then there should be some good snow in NY or VT.

So after recovering from a horrible hang over yesterday my revelation is that you ain't shit without your health. I went out Saturday night and made the mistake of drinking beer and Tequila on an empty stomach. Usually I'm pretty good at drinking but damn did I feel like a rookie at the end of the night. I was useless all day yesterday, I could not even look at the beer thread without dry-heaving. I'm gonna quit drinking until at least next weekend.
It did feel good to get back on the trails today, nothing special, just 2hrs at Wangchung. Without the wind 14 degrees felt downright warm.

I made a fire last night and Mary and I watched Bridge of Spies, it was a well made movie...I found it entertaining, Mary fell asleep. The Berlin wall reminds me of Reagan saying...Mr gorbachev, tear down this wall...which reminds me of Jesus Jones song Right Here Right Now. Unfortunately the official video from JJ is no longer available...WTF. That was their big hit, why would they get rid of that video?

@Clapper, yeah moderation. Seem like this winter I have been ramping up the drinking on the weekend. During racing season training, weekend races and having to get up at 3:30 am for work keeps me in line, its nice having less structure in the winter but it also gives me more opportunity to drink too much. I'm not gonna say I'll stop drinking because that just blows, I will cut it back and stay in control doe.

@1sh0t1b33r , speaking of moderation I also need to cut back my Internets time. Your user name sucks by the way. I haven't even had my smart phone for 2 months and already I feel like I spend too much time on it doing stupid stuff. Scrolling through Instagram feels like homework sometimes, if I don't keep up with the feed I feel like I'm missing something, same with FB. In reality these social media sites are like soap operas, even if you miss a few days or weeks its easy to catch up. I do find Instagram a bit more interesting (Porous Walker), while FB is usually the same picture of Frank at Allaire or a recently divorced HS classmate posting her 3rd selfie of the day at 7:30 am. I mean this shit is entertaining to a degree but like booze...if you overindulge you become sick of it.

Now is the winter of our discontent. I'm not sure what this means exactly but when Shakespeare wrote this I think he was talking about a day like today. There is no snow so you can't xc ski, the trails are too wet from the recent rains, which means no mtbing and the sky is so gray...all this leaves one feeling really fucking depressed. I did get on a road ride today and embraced the day as dismal as it is.

Hey did you steal.some dudes wallet at the Wilco show in brooklyn? News this am had story about dudeman wallet was stolen at show, but thief mailed dudeman license and credit cards back to him, with a note saying he kept.his cash because he had to buy weed. Love it

I was just playing, you know I'm not allowed to judge anyone with my track record. I agree with the 'you ain't shit without your health' statement. Weekends aren't for lying on the couch with a headache, they are for bike riding.

Ouch this one hurts as it seems how my winter has gone. I am on a no beer streak myself but haven't been able to make any time for riding yet. I am collecting some new parts though. Rollers are hard so far, I now need to start setting alarm an hour early to make myself use them.

Yesterday was like the quintessential winter day. Chilly, cloudy and damp. Not cold enough to do feel warm while riding. Few more weeks and we will be outta this....
