This is NOT my bike.

This is for next year, as I'm strapped for cash at the moment.

$240 for both Large Marge rims
~$70 for the front fork.
~$250 for the tires
~$22 tubes
~$$$ Hubs/Spokes
~$$$ Labor

Would this even work with a 2011 Kona Unit frame? He has an older Unit frame, but the geometry on the rear looks different.

It's the winter set up I'd like on my Unit, instead of buying another separate $1700 bike.

The big question - Possible?

I think Matty or bighit was talking about this, You can setup the front to run like that, but not the rear.

without looking at it, im willing to bet norms pint glasses that fat ass tire wont clear the frame.

Even with an 1/8th MM of clearance it'd work. It just needs to fit, and not have to have the rear triangle reworked, because I want it to be able to be converted back right after the winter season.

Maybe I'll see what 2012 has in store.

if the frame is set up for 29rs it should clear the rear triangle. Plus you dont have to run the 3.2 on the large marge rims i dont think, maybe a 2.7? that would give you more space.

The main point here should be that it's overkill for our area. Just grab a set of studded tires on your regular rims and play with the pressure and you'll have a ton of fun snow riding. Of course it's not as capable as this but usually the conditions are not consistent enough to warrant this kind of purchase in my eyes.

I just though it looked pretty sweet, something to mess around with in the winter.

Maybe I'll just see how big I can get away with, without spending the extra cash.

Oh you're right. Totally sweet and I'm sure a blast to have fun with. I just don't think I'd use it often enough to warrant the purchase. If I had the money and the space...I'd own one or two 😉

My friend has one of these, it's not really that great. I think the fat tire bikes are a bit more useful.

Yeah the promotional video they have shows some dudes going down a ski hill. No one on "real" trails. The Ktrack looks cool but I'd believe the fat tires work better.

anyone who buys a ktrack needs to learn how to ski. this would be like going to moab in June on skis with wheel adapters on the bottom to ride the trails. = dumb.

Yeah Chris hit it on the head. I do admire the idea and design though. But more in a "thats kinda neat" way. I don't know what I would think if I ever saw someone riding one of those.

If you want halfway decent traction in snow, you run Skinny tires, NOT fat tires. Look at all snow tires for cars or bikes (the ones that are not studded). Physics 101, Pressure = force (weight)/contact area. Greater the pressure, greater the traction.

On a side note, The fat tire bike in the first post looks killer 🙂

Smurf,

This would be true for light snow cover but for deep or crusted snow you want to be on top, not cutting through. Remember with a car you have all the power you need in slick conditions, but on a bike you have to plow though the snow. Think about trying to ride through deep sand with skinny tires.

With all that awesome powder they had in that video why would I be on a bike. The heck with that , my skis would be on hitting that fresh pow !
