Is Hilltop Reservation legal?

Hi all. A buddy and I went to Hilltop Res. in Verona/Cedar Grove? last week since we've read about people riding it, so we wanted to check it out. We were greeted by a sign that said no bikes and that fines were $500. We also saw tire tracks on single track in the park, so people are riding it. Does anyone know what the story is with this place? The sign looked kind of old so has the county changed the policy or are they just not enforcing bans? Thanks.

It's illegal there. There is no biking on any County property in Essex. This means your 7 year old can't ride their 12" bike around Verona Park too.

they mean bussiness there, coz they need whatever money they can get.i did however rode here regularly on my commute.but don't do like i did.i'm a fearless stoopid mtbiker.🙂

stay away from there!

I may or may not ride there only on weekdays during the morning hours. IMO it's the best/safest time to ride since The number of Hikers and dog walkers are low.

I may have reported gun shots to a cop while there while on a bike and the bike thing was never brought up.

Weekends are fine, hikers at Hilltop are happy to see us....just be pleasant and respectful to everyone and leave the trails as you find them!

I usually start at Mills and ride around back of the reservoir then down along the path before I get to HT.

HT doesn't have half the hikers and dog walkers that Mills does.

I take the West Essex trail from Little Falls to just beyond Rt. 23 and take the single track through the jump section up to HT proper. I respect all trail users and no one has ever given me trouble, even at Mills where it can get crowded, which I usually avoid during peak times since there are so many families and free-roaming dogs.

I see a lot of bikers passing through there and haven't heard anything negative about bikers from hikers. When I first moved here, a few of the LBS in the area may or may not have suggested riding there and doing small group rides in the mornings or late evenings.

When I walk my beagle thru Mills I have way more trouble with loose dogs than anything else. During the week I ride & walk my dog there in the mornings and it's rare that I see other mtb'rs

I may or may not be riding here tomorrow morning. I pass a bunch of spots on my road ride and was able to see the trails...they look fine
