Looking for 29er tire suggestions…

I want to max out the tires on my 2023 Salsa Cutthroat. Looks like the bike supports 3” upfront and 2.4” rear. Got dizzy just searching around for 29x3 and have concerns that some 3” might require wide rim width. I will be running with tubes any suggestions would be a help…

Ikons are sweet but the biggest is a 2.6. That would still look like a pretty big tire compared to the rear and wouldn’t need a plus width rim.

Just curious why?

I had 2.8 Maxxis Ikons on my Hightower, but they were 27.5. Worked well though.

I’m still a bit of a tubeless beginner. I’m running tubeless on two newer bikes where I found I cannot break the bead to get the tire off in case of a flat so I’m not gonna fight it and just use it as designed.

On other bikes that I use less often ( and like to be able to easily swap tires ) I don’t want all the maintenance and hassle of refreshing sealant etc.

It’s solving a problem that I really haven’t had HOWEVER this tire swap is for a trip out west so maybe….. ( cactus spines, goat heads etc )

Either way I need to come up with some tires first

This sounds like mountain biking??

you ok Warren?

😀

as an aside, go tubeless, carry a dart kit and one of those new fangled pumps (see other thread) - and a cell phone
New sealant every so often is good too.

speaking of that - I think @Steve Vai should carry spare tires when he does the long rides - wouldn't take any more time than putting in a tube.

I have 29x2.6 Recon on the front of the Hightower and I love it. The Hightower had the same tire size limits so I was running 29x2.4 on the rear, but I think the I think the Maxxis usually run a bit narrow so I want to switch to a 2.6 in the rear also. You migh want to get one and see if it would fit on the rear.

I think running the 29x2.6 Ikons both front and rear out west would be a sweet setup. Just my opinion.

P.S. When I did my trip to Fruita and Moab about 15 years ago, 29x2.1 Maxxis Ignitors were the go to tires. Worked great everywhere at the time.

P.P.S Flashback Photo from that trip. @Steve Vai built that bike after Trek replaced the frame for the 4th time. 😀 This one broke too.

Tubeless it is. PIA for needing to deal with sealant changes, will also remove any interest in changing tires. Bikepacking not actual mountain biking 😉

Where are you riding this bike? Is it mostly gravel or singletrack?
I have been happy with the stock 2.2 tires for East Coast gravel bike packing. Going to AZ in March bikepacking and it will be a mix of gravel roads, single track and some demolished fire roads. Trying to smooth the ride out for comfort rather than being shaken to pieces.

no need to change sealant, get the valve stems with removable cores, put a couple oz in when the sloshing stops (i go over a year without topping up, so not sure why this is a deterrent to tubeless) dont need to take tires off until they are ready to be replaced.

I'd look at Vittoria...Peyote, Mezcal and Barzo all come in 2.6" (and 2.4" for the rear). Shouldn't need much more bite in your tread for that type of riding and will still roll very fast.

I like how you roll 👍

I’ll try that and see how it goes.

thanks

With tubes it won’t matter.

Now that I’ve just been flipped to tubeless ( at least for this AZ trip 🌵🌵 ) I think I’ll switch to tubeless on the existing 2.2 tires and just suck it up. On the upside I won’t feel any pressure to flip-flop to a faster tire when I return. Perhaps airing down the PSI with tubeless will improve comfort a bit without the risk of a pinch flat.

Thanks for all the info.

If you’re still thinking tubeless 2.6, I have a pair of XR4 Team Issues with only a couple of rides on them. I find them to be fast rolling but not as good in the corners as Minions. Might be better suited to your use case? $75 obo for the pair. Located in Madison.

Thanks for the offer, given the price of tires that’s a really good deal. I’ll pass as I can only fit a 2.4 as the back tire and I’ll wait until I get the wider rim wheelset prior to buying the tires.

I have getting a dynamo hub front wheel for my road bike, a complete new wheelset for my Single speed and getting a winter wheelset for my fat bike ahead of getting a new wheelset for my Cutthroat….😢
