Hey whats up fellow riders I was wondering if anyone can help me out. 'm looking for something that I can take that will help me lose some weight along with riding my bike. Any kind of good input is greatly welcomed.🙁

I wouldnt take any thing that says it will make you loose weight. Diet. To start, figure out how many calories you need to maintain your weight and eat like 500 less. Just make sure you eat enough. Too little and you will store fat. Start with the basics first.

dont take anything...have a good diet and exercise. Try eating 6 small balanced meals a day. sorry not much help...i tried different things over the years, not much worked. lost most my weight eating responsibly with cardio mixed in with weight training. good luck with the weight loss

thanks guys I will try it out and I hope it works out for me. Trying to get ready for a trip to Utah with some freinds next spring

If you dont have it already, invest in some GOOD winter riding clothing and just ride straight through the winter. That'll be your best bet.

If you dont know how to calculate your required calories this site has some good info. www.muscleandstrength.com . Theres a bmr calculator in the tools menu.

Just be smart with things. If it sounds too good to be true it probably is. Theres a lot of good info on the internet but also a lot of really bad info too.

Just remember if your doing a lot of cardio you need to account for that and eat a littlw more. Otherwise you will fall too low and again start storing fat.

As you cut down on your calories, make sure you still get some fat in the equation, otherwise you'll just always feel like you are starving.
For me during the week breakfast is oatmeal with chia seeds,
which has the benefit of feeling very filling and having a nice slow burn so it keeps me going til lunch easily.

and +1 on the 6 meals a day, and make dinner a lighter one.
Good luck- you have great motivation with that Utah trip.

What worked for me....

Road biking ( in my case over last winter ) really resulting in pounds being shed. I suppose everyone tackles the diet (supply) side of the equation differently. In my case just getting to a more uniform diet without sweating the calorie count enabled me to focus on the burning of calories (the demand side).

Road biking, which I started only due to snow stopping the MTB season, really worked for me. I wound up road riding approx 4-8 hours per weekend and that puts a lot of biker muscles into play for a loooong time. Slow and steady effort puts the body into fat burn mode and the hills work on improving power by building muscle.

For myself MTB is not effective as a fitness base as it stresses my body in a manner where 8 hours every weekend (plus the crashes) would cause lots of problems.

In summary "Road biking: It doesn't suck as much as you might think."

I make sure that my helmet has an MTB visor, MTB shoes, crossbike not roadbike, camelback rather than bottles and hairy unshaven legs to avoid being confused with quiche-eating-roadie-eurotrash. ( but they may already know that by simply noting that I am doing 12mph not 22mph ) 😀 😀

Your results may vary but this is what worked for me.

Good luck Al.

I've found that a free app called myfitness pal has really helped me keep track of my caloric intake as well as motivate me to stick to a diet. So far I've been able to shed 12 lbs in 3 weeks. Check it out it may help you too.

cut out the white stuff (pasta's, white bread, etc); sugars (high fructose corn syrup is poison), processed foods - look for higher proteins - salads with a protein on top; lighten up on portion size and reach for fruit between meals instead of the crappy stuff - i lost 30lbs this way in 3 months... no counting points, no pills... just started eating better AND stayed disciplined about it.... riding more always helps (tell your wife you HAVE to ride more in order to loose the lbs 🙂 ) but, at the end of the day, it starts with YOU and deciding you are going to eat right EVERY day... do a protein shake within a 1/2 hour of a ride - it accelorates your metobalism...

go for a run! I run 10 miles minimum /week on a treadmill super fast ipod mandatory!! did you discover Cabot reduced fat cheese? Great melted

tips

Like another writer mentioned, cut out the white stuff.Aim for three decent sized meals and two to three snacks to keep your satisfied. Also, inch your way into these two things: Just drinking water and doing a 18 hour fast once a week. Fasting really isnt that hard after a couple times and is actually pretty good for you. Make you last meal at 4 and next at 10 the next day. Easy on the wallet too since youll be eating less food per month. Good luck. Keep at it. and as eddy merkxx once said "Ride lots!"

one last thing!

Forgot to mention-make sure the first meal you eat after fasting 18 is a solid one.shoot for lean protein and some greens or something like that. First time i fasted in two months yesterday and after i was done i completely undid the good effects i had of fasting after having three pieces of french toast and other crap at the dining hall. I really do encourage you to try it,though. Gives your bodies digestive system a good rest/really good for overall health.

No problem, man. keep at it!Recognize how much better you feel when you eat healthy. Personally, white bread gives me headaches and makes me tired. Every one is different, though.

Start a food journal. I never realized how bad my diet was until I put pen to paper. And I also use my fitness, I'm down 17lbs in a few months.

This is what has helped me lost weight, im down from 250ish in April to 208 this morning.

Liquids:

Black Coffee
Water
Diet Coke (many people will say no to this, but losing weight is as much mental as physical, and sometimes you need it)

Solids:

Chicken (baked, grilled, boiled)

I found alot of different ways to make chicken passable, at the end of the day it is what it is.

Dont be afraid to have some healty fats from foods like sweet potatos, avocado, and salmon.

Salt is going to make losing weight harder. It makes your body hold water, some of it is good, but you get enough salt from 1 gatorade.

Gatorade: I drink it before and during a ride but only after an hour of riding. Water should be all you need unless your training at a very high level or for an extended period of time.

All i would say is if you are active every day and eat clean when you are hungy, but control the prep of the food and dont add mayo, ranch, bread crumbs etc. you will be ok. Just remember it takes time, if you are neurotic and weight yourself 3 times a day like i do then you may get frustrated at first. Don't expect anything real for a month or so then understand there is an ebb and flow of losing weight.

I'd also like to add that doing varied excercises is really important. It depends on what you want to look like. Fat people always want to be thin, then you start losing weight and realize you still look awful since you have no muscle underneath, and since you've been dieting your body has been eating muscle occasionally from lack of use and caloric intake. So don't be afraid to life some weights or play some sports outside of riding.

well I'm not fat just chubby. I use to be a gym rat till I blew out my shoulder. I can't go to the gym cause I have a mentality to lift and when I do I bulk up fast and I'm looking to do that again I use to be 245 solid muscle. No more don't want to do that again. I'm just looking to lose 20 lbs and get down to 200 lbs and I'll be happy.
