Modern Automotive Headlights

Yellow fogs are not illegal as long as the bulbs are DOT approved. You can run white and amber to the front and red and amber to the rear. In general to be DOT compliant. The yellow fogs I have are Sylvania and DOT approved.

lol i never said they were illegal or not, thats just the policy at work when we are designing lighting systems, yellow doesnt improve anything visually so they dont use them for task lighting, only signal/marker lights.

Do cops ever pull someone over for illegal lighting? I've been driving with my red demon eye driving lights for over two years now.

Really not relevant in this application, but just read about headlights that use the adaptive cruise control/braking camera in cars to work with the lighting to create a “shadow” for on coming cars while emiting high beam quality light in the areas that won’t blind the oncoming driver. Apparently already being used Europe, but won’t come to US until 2024ish. Looking forward to when that arrives, it seems every new car’s low beams are blinding.

most likely they need to be adjusted, but since it doesnt get checked noone really knows . . .

Searched for GMC Headlight Modifications and found this on episode #31 of Roadkill.
They don't mention what brand of gas generator is running in the bed to power these lights. But I'm certain its awesome and capable.

friend of mine got pulled over for green rings around his headlights and under body glow.....
he is an adult and acted appropriately, so got a warning. also is a teetotaler, so no issue there,
cause who would select green sober?
yeah, it was a jeep.

Probably the underglow. I see lots of cars and jeeps with "illegal" rings/lights (i.e. not white or amber).

@Patrick Were you able to determine the light source in your truck? I had a 2016 GMC Sierra (factory LED headlight option, not what your truck has based on the picture). I am pretty sure the base lighting package in those trucks was HID (xenon gas bulbs fired/powered by ballasts). In that case you may just need new bulbs as I do believe they degrade over time. I suppose the ballasts could also be degrading but I would think the bulbs are the most likely culprit.

My window sticker says HID Projector.
I'll dig in more in a bit.

The progression from Halogen to HID/Xenon to LED has been interesting. I've only had one car with an HID/Xenon setup, and it spoiled me for the cars I've had since. Those headlights just worked better. I haven't had LED headlights yet, only DRL's and tails.

In recent years, I've noticed an exponential increase in drastically bright headlights that seem grossly misaligned. In other words, mofos are blinding me with their stupid headlights, be it in my rearview or oncoming.

I suspect some quantity of these offenders "upgraded" to brighter/whiter bulbs in their halogen assemblies and the reflectors aren't up to the task, so the light is just blasting all over the place, rather than projecting in an actual shape. And then you have the ding dongs that drive around with their high beams on at all times, which is another story.

Like the guy following me recently in a Jeep, with 1 of those stupid ass long LED light bars across the cowl by the windshield, turned on during the day.

What are the aftermarket ones (assumed) I see that seem to strobe/flicker at a really quick rate?
Almost as annoying as the aftermarket blinking brake lights.

And why TF isn’t red for tail/brake lights and orange for directional a mandated standard?

And get offa my lawn! Lol

I learned part of this is cheap aftermarket LED bulbs.

My Honda for instance runs 6v to the headlights during the day as driving lights and then the full 12V when the headlights are on. When aftermarket LEDs that are way too bright and scatter the light everywhere get the 6V they light up just the same as if they had 12V.

I'd definitely buy aftermarket fog light inserts for my car if I could be assured that they were bright enough to help see but weren't shitty and blinding other drivers.

Anything that isn't halogen should really be in a projector. But even with projectors, some HID/LED upgrades don't work well because the bulb isn't in the optimal spot, so you are either doing trial and error, or find what works well from car forums or reddit.

As for aftermarket stuff, people still and always will throw them in. They see better and it looks nice from the drivers seat. They don't care about other drivers on the road. I find aftermarket HID is usually better than aftermarket LED if you are upgrading. LED bulbs have diodes on one side, so unless you get lucky or play with the best orientation, your beam will be f'd. HID's do a bit better in both as the light is all around, but because of this, makes them worse in terms of blinding people when in reflectors. HID's have also been around longer. I used Kensun a few times. They were also good in sending replacement bulbs/ballast for free.

Factory installed LED's excellent. I am definitely spoiled with the LED's in the GTI. I don't think I could ever go back to straight halogens, and instant on without warm up time is great over HID's.
