Most overhyped bike trend?

I had the 3 pawl 370. They had an issue with the drive ring stripping the threads straight out of the hub.
I had them too. They make a kit to convert to ratchet. I just sold the bike which those wheels were on and never installed the upgrade kit. I did give it to the buyer though. Hopefully he installs it before the hub implodes.

Main complaint is that they're hard to put on because the Boa doesn't release enough slack. The fact that they're deeply discounted is a red flag, too. Are you using them and like 'em? They look nice and price is tempting.

For real though, they’re almost impossible to put on because the Boa doesn’t release enough slack. But once they’re on, holy hell are they good. They even got my co-worker Dennis off Japanthers and he’s my go-to for shit weather stuff because he Commutes every day and hasn’t missed a day in years. So he knows the most about this shit out of anyone I know. It’s easy to keep your feet warm in snow, it’s very hard to stay warm and dry at 32 and raining.

Is the 54T issue related to the old star ratchet or to the new EXP, which seems to have other issues as well? DT (not @Dave Taylor) initially did not issue 54T ratchet on EXP but I believe it does now. I would think maintenance and mileage make a difference, it definitely dies for me as I never had any issue with the 54T…

…I also rarely ride them!

The 54t fails in both versions. The EXP issue was just an improperly machined hub drive ring that came on the first batch. They sent out pieces and took care of those pretty quick. The 54t failure is the most common hub issue I see in the shop, followed by I9 hubshell explosions and snapped axles. We have dudes that try to run 54t ratchets in Levos too and I swear they last 3 rides max 😂

Ahh, was hoping you'd say it was user error. The only reason I'm considering replacing my older Defrosters is that THEY'RE a bitch to get on.

They’re definitely harder than Defrosters. The last gen Ragnarok was the peak of ease and warmth but weren’t very waterproof.

1,000,000 POE hubs
Obviously there is a tipping point but 36 point? I always thought the magic of dt was it not being pawl and ratchet and now people are converting them to that?

Crap. I've been eyeballing the Lake MXZ304, but they might be closer to Wolvhammers, which I already own, and are $350. They also have the MX146...

Are we turning this thread into this year's winter shoe thread?

OMG how did I not say BOA’s?!?!? Do they work? Yes. Are they convenient when they work? Yes. Have I broken at least one on every single pair of shoes I’ve ever had with them? That would be a big 10-4 good buddy.

In fact I have a warrantee replacement set sitting right here that I need to install.

I absolutely love my mullet bikes. All the fun of a 27.5 with the rollover ability of a 29. I'll probably own at least one forever tbh.
I'm all in on the MX setup. My inseam is short enough that not having my ass buzzed by a 29er rear wheel is reason enough.

It's better on switchbacks and the bike tend to accelerate a bit better. saves a little weight too

My mindset is:

4'-11 to 5-4". 27/27
5'-6 to 6 foot MX
6 foot or taller 29/29
6' foot to 6'-8" 29/36er
7 foot or taller 36/36

Yeah the first time i saw boas i said no thanks, not something i want to deal with, looks like something that would break at a really great time.

Gravel is for kids.

I got a Raleigh Record (white with orange head tube) in the 1970’s. Back then most of Hunterdon County’s backroads were gravel. I got smart quick and ditched it for BMX.

Plus, if you can’t enjoy the compliance, traction and sheer fun of a fat bike, I genuinely hope Santa brings you a gravel bike!

I think it was @jdog that pointed out that the problem with 27.5+ was that nobody put tires with actual tread on to save weight and that killed the benefits.

I definitely would say Fat Bikes were the most over-hyped trend. Not saying they don't have their uses but that was heavily pushed as the big new thing for a short time period until almost everyone realized they suck except in certain cases and aren't great for a multitude of trail types.

Gravel bikes were over hyped but their usage case is way higher and really most casual road riders would be fine on a gravel bike just as most road riders shouldn't have been buying the racier versions of road bikes. Heck I sold my road bike and use my cross bike as my road/gravel bike.

I'd agree with @UtahJoe about singlespeeds but it was quite a small minority hyping singlespeeds. IE, those that already owned them.

E-Bikes are over hyped as it's the "new thing" out there for shops to push, but they aren't going to die out like fat bikes and singlespeeds.

I've lived down in WNC for 13 months now and the closest I've seen to a fat bike on the trails here is I saw a guy on one in the parking lot with his kids at Dupont. Apparently nobody fell for the fat bike hype here.
For hype alone, I agree it's fatbikes, though I have two and the second was not because of hype. I remember they couldn't sell them faster and even a mongoose was selling for over 1k. It quickly saturated and burst after 2 short years. I actually had to order an OnOne fatty from UK as the options state side weren't economical. This one stays at the beach house for sand riding duties. Yeah, I see why some think it's the best "one" to own, but on general hype alone and maybe CX bikes for regular riding as a close second. How many realized that they are crazy as hell screaming downhill on roads. This pretty much lead the way for gravel bikes and blurred consumerism along with road bikes. Btw, what percentage of people buying gravel bikes actually ride on mixed surfaces?

I just got a new pair of MX146. They’re easier to get on than my old 15 year old lake boots. They’re a lot less Frankenstein creaturey too.
