My Mavic hub is making a crazy noise!

Good morning all,
I have a set of Kysryium wheels, with red hubs. They have been used for my cross bike the last 5 years or so. All though they did not get too muddy through out the years, the rear hub starts to make a crazy vibrating when coasting at about 15-20mph when Im road riding. If I stop coasting and soft pedel, it goes away, did not really ivestigate too much yet, does it need to be taken apart and cleaned? New parts, they do have about 6-7000 miles on them, most of it dry time.
Any thoughts?

Thank you, looks like it could be just a good cleaning or a rebuild kit including a cassette, I will take it apart this weekend and lube the hell out of every thing...

Thanks again.

Cleaning works sometimes, others the bushing is just too bad. Doesn't take more then a few minutes to disassemble and clean so it's worth trying.

Also, I have found that the pawls can actually wear and the little bits of metal mix with the oil in the hub and accelerate the wear. Over the years, mavic has updated the pawls to harder metal that doesn't wear faster then the teeth. I always do seal, pawls and freehub when the freehub needs to be replaced because of this though. The seals are prone to drying and hardening which could be another source of the noise.

New freehub and pawls... And inspect the hub where the freehub slides over. They get worn after 5 years or so. But what do I know... I'm new... here.

Is mavic ever going to do a redesign? There freehubs are great for the first few years and them have a bunch of drag later in life

I had this happen with a Crossmax wheel a while back. Cleaning and re-lubing the bushing and pawls took care of it. Definitely exciting when it happens on a fast descent.

Kevin - the newest hubs have a different bearing in the freehub, but the mechanism is exactly the same. I don't see them changing the design anytime soon.

I bought a set of those red-hub Ksyriums from STBKevin a year ago and they've been fine...with the exception of the noisy spokes.

Not to hijack, but this reminded me to look at my mavic hub last night. I have a slight bit of play in the freehub (if I grab the cassette and try to wiggle it will move, yes cassette is tight to freehub body).

Is this normal? Or is somethign worn? It's not "rattling around" loose, but there is visible movement.

Thank you everyone for lots of good information. I will take a good look at it this weekend, tear it apart as much as I can, and see what it looks like...

When the bushing inside the freehub wears down, you get this play. I have it (play) in my wheel too.

If you ride a lot, I would recommend replacing the cass body every year if you never service it. They can go for ten years if you take it apart and clean/lube it often.

I know this sounds like a lot, but trust me that I have had to replace over a 1/2 dozen hubs from neglect.

The cass body begins to eat the hub as it wears out

Also look for the free hub oil from these guys

I was experiencing the EXACT vibrating issues last week with my Crossmax wheel. I felt like the tire was rubbing and I was getting vibration throughout the entire bike but ONLY when coasting. Apparently this is extremely common because several of the guys on the ride diagnosed it and Jim Vreeland at Hilltop Bicycles in Summit took care of it in about 2 minutes. Don't ask me what he did, I just ride.... 🙂

Thanks JIM!

Well, I did forego a bike ride this morning, to fix this hub and get some car repairs as well. Took it all apart, axle out gave everything a BOBKE style cleaning, and behold!!! Like new once again..
