new rider/member here :)

Welcome to the site! I guess there are a lot of Tool fans here, awesome! Just watched Pushit on youboob.... Well done! You'll meet some really cool folk here. Have fun!!

I took a look at your FB link, (many here must be shocked as I am not a big FB fan), anyway, I'd like to talk to you a bit about your pickups as I had been considering reworking one of my basses a bit that has a split P pickup up front and a single jazz rail in the back. Although none of my current basses have Bartolini pickups in them I have always liked the sound and was thinking this was the direction I was going to go in but I am curious to hear about what you have going on. I will send you a PM with my cell.

Welcome the Thrill Dude. I grew up in Old Bridge (graduated from Cedar Ridge HS which is now the middle school I think). I live in Colts Neck now and I pass those trails you speak of by Lake Durhnal and John Philips Park (that's by the Wawa right?) every day on my commute to New Brunswick on rt 18. I have never riden them but wondered if they were worth riding. I do ride both 6 Mile and Allaire which are both great. Since you live in Old Bridge, Cheesquake isn't bad either. Its only a 3 mile loop but you could take it in both directions for a completely different ride (which adds up to 6 miles if my math is correct).

Since you are just starting out Cheesquake is pretty technical even though its short but it is a pretty good place to learn. Lots of log piles, off camber trails, short steep climbs (and decsents) and even a few "skinnys" and jumps. Allaire and 6 Mile both have a lot more trails but Cheesquake is nice and local to you. Some times I take the parkway to work and will sneak in an early morning ride at Cheesquake to get the blood flowing.

Welcome to the sport!

RNG1 - I'll give you a call later on. Thanks 🙂

Ride on - if you're in the area, I'd say stop by there and check it out but don't make a dedicated trip to do so... The trails are flat so you don't gain much speed through it... but for an hour ride it's not bad. Duhernal is mostly sand so you'd be hard pressed to get a good ride in unless you go along the edge of the dam and just follow the trail at the end of brookside but even then you're not looking at a far ride... granted, there are trails on the texas road side that are probably worth riding but I haven't been out there on a mtb yet - just a quad years ago and my recollection of the trail system is pretty slim. I've been wanting to check out 'quake, 6 mile and allaire but right now i'm working on some more endurance before i tackle places where other people will see me dying on the trails 😀

if any riders know of any cool places, let me know. only places i've been so far are around the duhernal reservoir (mostly sandy trails but some decent stuff) and John A. Phillip's park which seems to be okay... nothing too technical and mostly flat but for a newb such as myself, it gets the sweat pouring 😱

Welcome! FWIW, I'm from Old Bridge as well.😀

Anyway, as others have mentioned, Cheesequake is not too bad but it does get quite boring. I mostly ride on Friday at Hartshorne and you're more than welcome to come along for a spin. I leave work early on Friday's and try to start riding by 3pm. Most of my rides there are about 11mi long and they take my old ass about 2hrs to complete.

Edit, I'm always up for a quick after work Cheesequake ride.....Wed & Thu are my open days.

Hey Phil,
the beginner rides at allaire are good we have had people just starting out come down it is as fast as the slowest rider no pressure and if you do need to bail there is always someone who will lead you on out.
basically it is just a come on out and enjoy the trails with a bunch of like minded riders...we start at 6:00 pm on Tuesday nights run about 1.5 hours it is a great way to meet other riders...
BTW: good Tool stuff dude...

hmmm... that sounds quite nice 🙂. I'll have to see about getting down there after work, then. I need to take my bike in for its first adjustment (and get one for myself at my chiropractor's right down the road 😀 ) then I'll see about getting down there considering i work in linden...

oh and thanks 😉 again, not to sound like a commercial but any and all Tool fans can check us out at Dingbatz this saturday night... it's only 40 minutes east on rt 80 from the bike fest 😉

Welcome!! Wanna build me a 7-String? 😀

I'm also from Old Bridge, the Cliffwood Beach secteur. I've been in bands since high school, including the now defunct Old Bridge based Torq195 and later Halo-Generation. These days I study shred under local guitar hero Angel Vivaldi.

I remember Torq195... never seen them but I remember the name. Did you play in Halo-Generation with John M.?

I'm into building 8 strings at the moment 😉. I'm like 35-40% through an ash bodied, 5 piece neck 8 string for the guitar player in my Tool tribute and I have one that I started with intent to sell but haven't had a chance to work on it much. I have the neck wood cut, the body blank glued and surfaced but I have to fix the router motor on my CNC... stupid Hitachi routers 😡. That one is going to have a deep carved figured maple top on a poplar body. I made a bass with the same combo and it was awesome 😛

If you check out my facebook site, you'll see a 7 string bass I made... 7 piece maple/wenge neck with graphite reinforcements and dual truss rods, birdseye maple fretboard, blue fretboard LEDs, hand made pickups with a bartolini preamp setup... my favorite so far - especially because I sold that one 😀

boy this sure went off-topic, huh? 😛

I had an 8-string I actually just sold. RGA8. It was a bit too muddy and I had to crank it to hear what was going on in the low end. Especially at dropped-E. The RG228 is probably better as it comes with the EMG 808's which sound much crisper? Rounder? Fuller? Not sure what the correct term is there. Looking to replace it with another 7-String, an S4207, or something mo' customer😉

i've known john since his days in flipzyde although i was never a huge fan... i make him pucker once when he asked me about pricing on a guitar 😱 people don't understand that custom = $$$. My prices are along the lines of american fenders and gibsons with a more hands on approach to quality and craftsmanship. granted, i've taken the automated route to cutting out bodies but body carves and necks are cut by hand.

The RGA8 has a 27" scale which isn't enough for that low string which will make it sound flabby and i'm sure the crappy pickups didn't help... the ones I make are 28.5" scale
