Hi everyone! My name is Kari and new to the whole biking thing this year. A girl I worked with talked me into biking across country this summer, so I did, from Yorktown, Virginia to Florence, Oregon, and loved it. Well, looking back, I loved it, but at the time there were days I thought it rocked and days I was like "why are we doing this again?" Anyway, after three months on a touring bike, with some nice falls, sweet 45mph downhills, cruddy gravel driveways, hail storms, ridiculous winds, etc. I've gained a bit more confidence on the bike. While my touring bike is at Town Cycle, waiting to be spiffied up and taken care of after 4000 miles of loving abuse, I've been taking out my mountain bike (a 2008 Marin Bear Valley women's specific bike in a lovely shade of pink) on the Saddle River Bike Path in Bergen County and exploring some of the dirt trails the youngsters have made in the area. It's fun, I like it, and I'm hoping to learn more about mountain biking and find some places closeby to ride. I'm a definate beginner, but much less scared about crashing into trees and stuff than I was before this summer, so that helps. 🙂

Hello and welcome, nice to have you along. Would love to hear more about your trip. Most people go from left to right, but you chose the opposite. Way to buch the trend!

If you like long rides like that then hook up with Liong here 😀

For beginner MTB rides in Ringwood hook up with Cyclopath

Welcome...

Ok Zoller, you need to do something about this claptrap of a signature you have. Most of your posts are shorter than your sig. Plus, I think Oct 4 isn't actually happening anymore is it?

No coffee today Norm????? Ok Ok, I'll kill it...I was thinking about it the other day

OCT 4 is STILL happening, although I am not riding because I couldn't find a Handcycle....

That sounds like a great trip. I have always thought about biking across the country. How long did it take? Did you camp along the way or was the trip supported?

Welcome!! what an amazing trip that must have been!

You should come out to the Sunday 8AM No-Drop Beginner ride at Ringwood with us.
Great group of ppl to ride and learn with

Wow, across country! Kudos to you for finding the time and making it happen. I'd so love to do that. But there's no chance I'd get more than 4 or 5 days until the kids are in college. I'm not really complaining, I get lots of riding in anyway.

If you're free during the day, PM me. I lead two weekly road rides from Oakland at varying levels and one MTB ride on Sunday mornings in Ringwood. It's a no drop, no fear ride. Please join us.

The girls on this site(and some of the guys) are committed to a weekly daytime MTB ride somewhere, so keep your eyes in the Rides/Events and Ladies sections of the forum.

We do ride all year so you'll surely get the chance to ride in more hail and even some sleet and snow thrown for good measure.

Oh, and welcome!

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome. I hope to join up for some of the weekend beginner rides (and mid-week rides too, as I'm currently unemployed and don't have much going on at the moment). My schedule this weekend is booked right now, but I will no doubt have plenty of time in the future to meet up with members of the forum.

To answer some questions about the cross country tour: My bike was a 2009 Trek 520 (as was my riding partner's). Awesome bikes! We loved them and had no real issues at all during the trip. We left Yorktown on June 7th and arrived in Florence on September 13th, but we took two weeks off in Boulder to visit Tzvi (he was a regular rider in the West Milford area before he moved, some of you may know him), so it took us about three months to get across. We definately took our time though, taking in all of the sites and meeting people on the way. Dave and I rode self-supported, carrying all of our gear on a rear rack with panniers. Our highest mileage day was in Idaho, where we rode approx 104 miles, but we probably averaged about 60 miles each day or so. We followed the TransAm route for the most part, but did our own thing in Kansas and Idaho (and we enjoyed our own routes much better than the Adventure Cycling designated routes).

Town Cycle has taken awesome care of us, from picking out gear before the trip to phone and email support while on the road. I live in Paramus but continue to drive to Town Cycle for all my bike stuff because Mike, Ryan, and the rest of the guys are the best.

welcome Kari, im located in saddle brook and ride at least 3 times a week and would love to have you along and help you get into it more,

I'm friends with Tzvi, and as a matter of fact is in the "area" (either Long Island or West Milford) I think until Saturday.
