Hello all,

I am thrilled to have found this site! I have only been mtbing for a month or so, but have found my new passion. I ski (or skiboard) in the winter and have been looking for a non-snow activity to enjoy - I have found it!

I have been to Lewis Morris Park and few times and am enjoying exploring the trails there. I currently use a Giro Phase helmet; however, I am hesitant to do any jumps or logs with it. I am considering a fell face helmet. I know they are meant for downhill, but I think I would feel more confident with one. Any advice on the issue?

Thanks in advance for any info you may have regarding full face helmets and/or Lewis Morris Park.

Lou

yes....yer head will melt 😀...Full face helmets can get too hot & sweaty...personally I think is too much for XC....I would leave the full face only for Diablo or any other freeride/downhill adventure...

welcome.

Hey Lou, welcome aboard. What kinda bike you riding???

Helmets are a personal preferance, but if you notice around you, probably 99% of cross country riders wear a non full face helmet. An open face helmet provides more visibility, more air flow to your noggin and for the most part are a bit lighter.

Thanks for the input everyone.

Walter - I am riding a hardtail Iron Horse Quantum with Rock Shox and disc brakes. I bought it to hold off spedning big bucks for a year and make sure I am committed to mtb. Next season I plan to set a $2,500 budget and will defintely be riding someting better.

I have seen some posts about that ride and am planning to join if I can get out of work early enough on a Tuesday. Thanks for the invite.

Yes. Your head will overheat and you'll pass out. Probably while climbing. You will then proceed to bounce down the hill backwards until you are impaled by a stump, killing you instantly. Doesn't that sound a lot more dangerous than that silly log your trying to get over😉

-Jim.

Thanks, Jim. My confidence is restored! No need for a new helmet! Lol.

Yes but his head will be better protected🙂

Hi, come ride the beginners ride at Allaire on Tuesdays,....no full face required.

Tuesdays? What about those of us that work for a living? I'm new to here but what does Allaire have to offer? I've seen a trail via the internet, but I want hills. I'm by Fort Dix so I have no idea where it's good to ride yet.

its only an hour away from you, might as well check it out if youre getting into riding!

Tuesday rides start at 6pm and run until sunset (usually around 8-8:30ish). Last time there was 30+ people that showed up.

Allaire offers FUN. It does not have what I would consider Major hills, but believe me some of the climbs are looong and can be a test at times. The trail directory is your best bet to find trails in your area.

This is a great forum. Glad to have found it. Thanks for all the advice, everyone. I have decided to stick with my non-full-face helmet. Will you all laugh if I wear knee/shin pads to boost the confidence? Lol. Thanks again for all the insight.

I don't ride Ringwood or Wawayanda without shinguards, but I am also seeking out the rockbeds to have fun with.

Now i'm actually looking for elbow/forearm guards after I used my hand to stop my fall and tweaked my wrist.

So, no...nobody will laugh at you. Everybodies skill level is different, and as long as you ride, it's all good.

Thanks, qsilvr99 - That's what I like to hear. I will be getting some elbow/forearm guards too. Safe riding!

As long as you are riding you could wear a speedo and no one would look at you funny.
