no more pug for bighit

ridin my ghetto sno-bike: Karate Monkey with Sun Double-wides and Duro Leopards...

I took a lead from Sean Grady (aka Nanook of the North) and built up these 26" wheels for my KM (dyno hub in front, 22-tooth SS in rear). It easily rode through a few inches of snow (3-5 in), but got stuck in the deeper stuff... Fresh tire tracks are perfect for these. I ran them at about 10 psi (where they felt sluggish, like I was pedaling a quad), then at 18 psi, where they felt better/more normal (if not less grippy, no big deal...) I had a blast riding the roads last night and today. I can't wait for a few trails to get packed down... Peace,
BB

thanks matty i have been beating the drum for almost 5yrs now.
nice bike bob. i still have an extra endo for you if you go to the surly adventurer fork.

i havent ridden yet. i had to dig out and had a stove fire. i got the snows and rack on the car, flat pedals are on also.

it's CR tomorrow morning. anyone for 9:30?

yeah thanks for the first 30min. i was on my own for the next 1.5hr.:drooling:

i ended up with 5psi in both wheels. 2psi less than when you rode it earlier. i was in the 22-34 ring the whole time.

you should be able to ride it now with 2" extra on each side.

it may have even crusted up and formed a nice slot to ride in. i am going tomorrow to pound it down some more. we will get there 4" at a time.

No pug here either - but I am in the Doublewide camp. I found trail-blazing a 'bit' exerting. I also discovered 'porposeing' the front end, timed with 12/6 o'clock pedal positions minimized the the wrong gear effect. It didn't make it any easier though...

Holy seatpost Tom you must be a large man, Tires?

Keep in mind the frame is small and has 24" wheels on this, so the seatpost length is deciving, similar to how it looks on my EWR. I thinkin he is on the taller side though but can't remember. That bike is a beast (in a good way).

Bighit,
How does the Fatbike bike handle this snow? Is it a lot easier to ride than a 29er with low pressure fat 29er tires? I've ridden a Pugs a couple of times but on dirt in the summer. The two local bikes I'm very interested in are your Fatbike and Al's McClung.

got to my blog and watch the vid of me riding at CR yesterday. i was on trails where no one else had been. also notice i was riding one handed because i was taking the video. i couldnt do that on my pug.

the fatback is way more stable than the pug. it was built totally different and you notice it right off the bat. after riding a pug for years i realized that it is a tank. you have to move it around to get it where you want it. i think the Ti adds to it big time. also there is no offset in the rear wheel so its super stiff.

there is no comparison between the two. the 3.7 tire wins the snow award hands down. if i follow a 2" trail in the snow my 4" tire crushes the snow and or mud into the grove a skinny tire made. i tend to ride on top of skinny tire ruts and flatten them out. i used 5psi in each wheel and it ate up the 6-8" of snow. you can hear my tires packing it down in the vid.
