NYC PABT Commuters

Paul H

Fearless OOS Poser
I've been thinking about locking up a bike around PABT and using it to commute downtown. Is there a good spot where I can lock up my bike overnight and weekends? I'll be using my POSS... Piece Of Steel Shit.

nothing in NYC is safe especially over night
in reality the POSS is too nice, especially with the parts you swapped in
you need to find/build a rusty single speed worth less than $5 to be safe
that's what they do in Holland where bike theft is about 40%
they buy a real POS expecting to get it stolen a few times a year, they usually keep a nice weekend bike for club rides

Only thing worth anything are the crank and wheels.

Thinking about taking off the current wheels and put back the original 27" wheels and make it a ss.

I'm taking off an old crank from my wife's bike, you're welcome to it
yes, put back on the crappy wheels and hit the frame with a BFH a few times...

The POSS has those oversized BB shell... currently has threaded cartridge BB with an adapter... I have couple of crap cranks for loose bearing BB but the BB won't work on the POSS

I do have a 22" mongoose frame to mess around with that has the regular sized BB shell...

You might be on to something here. Spend $30 on a bike. Create a pool to bet on how long it lasts. Take cut of pool to use for next $30 bike.

Your biggest problem will be collecting the $$$.

A slightly more serious suggestion is...

A bike without pedals and a seat is probably less likely to be stolen. Think about it from the thief's perspective. Your bike is just a faster and cheaper means to go 10 blocks. But, if I can't pedal it and I will have a pole up my ass as well, then I might look for another alternative. A false flat tire may add to the effect. You can recover these 3 items in about 2 minutes though with a seat clamp, a 15mm cone-wrench and a CO2 cartridge. Further, moving the bike around might help, as opposed to the same bike in the same place.

The fence on 8th ave between 42nd and 43rd always has bikes locked to it. Most are missing parts but that is the only location that comes to mind.
I walk the same block and I see the same bikes there every day. Some are rusted out and look like they never move, but others seem to get used because they end up in different places on the block and look rideable.

From what I hear, Most bike thiefs are drug addicts only interested in making $20 for their next hit. They have no idea what is worth what. A bike in dilapidated state soundz like the best idea.

Everything on the POSS is a bolt on... Or will be so there is really nothing for me to take off to take with me.

Maybe I can carry an allen wrench with me and twist the handlebar so it looks unappealing?... never thought i would say this about the POSS...

I guess my main question is... Would the city confiscate the bike at all? Being lock up to a fence or post of some sort.

I mean if the bike gets stolen... I prolly won't be crying a river...
