I bumped my RAM from 2gigs to 8 a few months back in my laptop, I also noticed a huge difference. I was on the fence for an SSD because I don't want to dump too much money in an computer that's a few years old. The reality is I won't be buying a new computer anytime soon, so it sounds like I should just go for it.

yes do it, i put a SSD into my computer, boot time went from about 25 seconds to about 7

I dropped a 256gig SSD in my laptop two nights ago, seems like money well spent so far. Super easy clone and swap. Crazy how the prices have dropped too, when I bought my laptop I recall a ~20gig boot SSD being like a 500$ upgrade.

I usually buy 120GB SSD laptop drives monthly for my team to use as hard drive replacements when our user's laptop drives die. The tech walks away looking like a miracle worker because of how fast the user's laptop runs with the new SSD drive.
