Registering a tralier

I am looking for a kayak trailer as loading on a roof takes too long and it gets harder every year. They are fishing kayaks weighing over 100#s. What's the registration process? I've read you can't register one without a title but others say it's okay with just a bill of sale? What's the real answer for us in NJ? Looking at folding aluminum trailers that I can be stored inside when not in use.

It you purchase a non-titled trailer from a dealer, the bill of sale serves as your receipt to get a registration.

If you buy one privately, you'll need a copy of their last registration and a notarized letter of sale with a date and price to pay proper tax, and get it registered.

I've done this with boat trailers.

I've been told by MVC that trailers under 2500 lbs do not need a title.
UNLESS, it already has a title for whatever reason. Then it has to stay titled. I had this happen with a small camping trailer.
For some reason the previous owner had a title. MVC said that was a mistake, but they had to issue a title. Took hours of managers calling managers to get it done. They said come back in a few hours and it was done.

This! New often comes with Mfg's Certificate of Origin, which is best case and also accepted by NJMVC.

Any chance you're looking for a canoe trailer with (8) canoes?

Yeah, seems it's not clear to the MVC either, but how complicated could this be...

I've also read that some trailer companies don't come with titles unless you ask for one, and in NJ they would want one. How would the MVC even know if your used trailer was even ever titled?

They can tell from the registration if there was a title.
Do they care that much? Probably not.
Out of state? def not.

The people working Flemington MVC seem to be good at this.
Maybe cause farm country?
Worth talking to them. In person if possible.

On titles:
Our last car came with an electronic title - go figure.
if I sell it back to the dealer, I don't have to do anything.
if I sell it privately, I need to pay $60 to get a paper copy......NJ at its best.

In my case they would not have know.
I had the title from the previous owner and gave it to them when I registered.
They couldn't understand why I had a title for a trailer under 2500 lbs. But because I gave it to them they couldn't ignore it.
They told me if I never showed them the title it would have been much easier.

Bureaucracy at its finest, give them the bare minimum or else...
