Ships Log: Fat Aircraft carrier war games

Until a few weeks ago I’d always thought wooden runabouts were all Chris Craft. Didn’t know there were different brands. The “Teal” is a 28’ Garwood. Gorgeous boats.

Same....I remember when I first met Wayne and he was describing these boats to me....I thought the same thing...how little did I know.

Their charter yachts were amazing and such a cool experience to go on. The first one was went on was called "Flame" since it had burned....They bought it and fully restored it. It was a 1956 Fedship...man the work they did on the interior....everything was custom made mahogany inside that wayne hand built. We got to spend a week cruising around the Virgin Islands on this boat feeling like FDR....it was really awesome.

Then they sold it and bought this catamaran......Spending a week on this was also didnt suck....i'd say some of the best vacations I have ever been on.

Wasnt all the expensive either with 6 people....~$2000 for 7 days and I didnt take my wallet out a single time for anything...3 prepared meals a day (wayne is a free diver so he got us fresh lobster and fish), all the alcohol we wanted, go anyway....man, I would NEVER go on one of those stupid cruise ships again after doing this.

I was going to post about this race sooner...but its much easier to describe this day with the above picture

So to date...I can't say bob has been too much into bike racing.....Bike riding, yes. With racing he is kinda meh on it.....Which im fine with. Not like there are many kid races out there. ESC has a great kids class....but there was only 1 ESC race that is close by and dedicating a whole weekend away is not really something I want to do yet. We planned to do the ESC at Glen park in June, but then bob crashed and broke his arm at creek and that was the end of that.

He expressed no interest in doing this race....If I mentioned it, he would just tell me "no I hate glen park"...but whatever, he hates everything that he is not currently doing at that moment in time. So on friday I took him and the ebike out to Glen park with the goal of ride att 5 of the stages. I brought the ebike bc with the late in the day start and 5 ~500ft climbs....I worried we might be out there well after dark....

So I made him pedal the first 1.5 climbs....then I started towing him.....which is not as free of a ride as you might think.....but it is indeed MUCH quicker.

A few small but nice changes to the course since the ESC race. Really, there is nothing overly difficult on any of the stages outside of stage 4. Stage 4 has a couple of steep/loose chutes that you can over cook if you carry too much speed into them. Once we got thru the first stage, he was on board....He was loving Glen Park...awesome. I wasnt really worried about the stages....Bobs ridden creek plenty now, wildcat, ringwood, jungle, sterling, etc...like riding downhill, I knew he'd be ok....I didnt know if he would be able to do 2500ft of climbing in 12 miles tho. We've done some long rides, but 5, 500ft climbs for a 10 year old...???? no idea what was going to happen.

Got out there sunday, got signed in, etc. This also goes along nicely with the fact that i broke my middle finger and sprained my wrist about 10 days ago....I can ride with it, but it hurts and my hand goes numb whenever I try to go fast....so just riding with bob on this day was perfect. There is no "kids" class for mass, so bob was in the 15U. Which is fine, but I explained to him....you are going to get taken to the woodshed by the older kids, so don't have any dreams of winning. He was fine with that. But I did also tell him...if you just do the basic fundamentals of an enduro race....Ride all 5 stages without makes mistakes, pedal everywhere as hard as you can, and hit the chip boxes perfectly....you will be surprised how well you do.

We started on stage 2....bob has used the chip timing before and the flowduro at Lars' house...and while that is just for fun....at least he knew how to use it already. Bob gave the older kid in front of him a good bit of time, then chipped in and we were off. I have to say, as much as he hates working when we just ride around....at least in a race...I don't have to tell him to sprint.....He just pedaled his ass off. About 1/3 of the way into the stage, we catch up to the kid in front of us...this is never fun in an enduro....passing usually sucks...but the kid was awesome and let bob go by.....He hit everything perfect, no mistakes and was even ready for the chip out box at the end.

Climbed back up, nailed stage 3....went onto the harder stage 4. I was like DEEPLY hoping that he wouldnt crash on the steep chutes....As I told him when we practiced them.....you are rolling in at like 3mph.....WORST that will happen is you will tip over going really slow....no big deal if you crash. But he absolutely nailed it.....and when we got to the end, the stoke was quite high.

Finished up the last couple of stages without issue......and I asked him at the end...."do your legs hurt after all of the climbing?" he gave me a resounding "nope".....That is what surprised me most.

He rode all 5 stages perfectly, not a single bobble, slide, missed turn, foot down...nothing...nailed all of the timing boxes.......I couldnt have asked for a better day for him.

I dont think there was a point in this race where I wasnt smiling...every picture I have seen thus far

Ironically Dillion Van Wart took this picture and as I have said many times.....When I started racing way back in 2008 and I first saw Dillion and Dave riding together before the Jungle race...I can still remember thinking...."I have no interest in having kids...but dam that looks pretty awesome"

Truly more satisfying than any race I have done for myself.....

In the end, bob finished 13th of 20 in the 15U class.....not that it really mattered, but yes, im SURE he would have not have loved being last...

Just a killer day and im hoping that wasnt the last ever Glen Park event, this venue is just too perfect for enduros.
