I rode dozens of bikes in the $500-600 range and ended up with a 2010 Trek 4300 disc. I had the best fit out of cdale, giant, fuji, k2, diamondback, and a few others.
I really like it. It's got excellent components for being entry level and rides very well. The fork has a nice lockout feature and rebound adjustment.
Tires are okay but I definitely need something with more dirt grip and brake pads with more bite.
Other then that I love it.
Oh and I boght shimano clipless pedals and now looking for shoes.
