The conditions for the next few days...

This is my first winter riding in Jersey. I don't know what the conditions will be like at spots like Six Mile and Clayton after this snow blizzard.

Usually how long should I expect to wait for the conditions to be acceptable for riding again? What should I look out for in particular?

April is a good estimate. It is really hard to say. I have seen the woods shut down for a month or more from heavy snow. Keep in mind that when it melts, the ground is frozen and the water can not soak in like summer. Sometimes you get ice and can ride on top with studs.

Check here and Jorba site conditions page: http://www2.jorba.org/index.php?title=Trail_Conditions for updates.

March can be a frustrating month, because the days get longer and warmer making us all want to ride, but freeze thaw begins and the trails need some time to dry out. Good time to ride the road, if you have that option.

Just pray that it doesnt snow alot monday and this snow will be gone by next weekend. Also providing the weather forcast stays the same for the next 10 days. lol

It's impossible to say. The Tourne might have some ridable trails in the next couple of days. It has enough traffic that they get packed down pretty quickly, at least some of the main trails. What then usually happens is it gets too icy to ride without studs, but sometimes you get a while in between where it's great. Maybe it will melt a bit and freeze and form a layer of crust over the snow and make everywhere ridable. That happened a couple of years ago and it was the best riding I've ever seen in the winter.

Drove past Allaire today on my way to help a bud dig out. The area got hit hard, numerous trees and power lines down throughout the area. Heavy wet snow of over 16" deep...it will be a while. 🙁

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I don't have a road bike and despite having lived in Canada for a few years I never got into winter sports.

I considered getting a road bike but the funds are limited right now. Besides knowing how the soccer moms drive while focused on their cell phones in Jersey, I don't have a death wish yet and would like to live a little longer.

Will have to check 9W...there must be lots of snow on the shoulders...

Pulled a Liong (not distance-wise) this morning and took out the SS mountain bike on the
road. The shoulders were fine for the most part. Some parts where there is no shoulder
are sketchy - but not too much of this. I would say it's rideable on a road bike, but be careful
for small patches of snow and spots where gravel/salt has gathered, esp where there is no
shoulder. Stay off the smaller roads - some of them are a mess in patches .. I probably
would have crashed or walked if I was on a road bike.

Here's what 9W looks like in most places - at least up to Alpine:

Wanted to take Hudson River Drive on the way back .. mistake .. after you go down the big
hill from Alpine police station, it's closed. No snow plowed. May be good for snow biking

Went down to the Alpine marina and took some photos:
