The DIY thread - DIYourself

It's really not the gas power equipment but more the actual gas itself that sucks. I do agree the motors are absolute garbage today. My zero turn which was 4 yrs old threw a rod through crankcase. My snowblower is from 80s needed a new Tecumseh carb, $130 later motherfers, but she started right up. I use ether for all troubled starts, pretty sure I was taught this back in the 70s auto shop class 😅

Makes me wonder if using the store bought fuel is really better (Ethanol free). True Fuel has 4 cycle and 2 cycle options but I can see this getting expensive (ie. my generator has a 5.5 gallon tank).

and then i am sure I would forget which machine has it and mix in regular gas anyway.

dont you use STABIL in your fuel? i buy the one with the ethanol treatment in it and havent have a problem since i started doing this. the ONLY thing i drain gas out of is the snowblower anymore.

yes i use stabilizer on everything all year round actually good point. the generator and snowblower have a fuel cutoff switch and after I use them I always run them until the carb is empty.

just seems like the carb/starting issues come up eventually no matter what.

its always a chance, but since i have used the stabil with the ethanol treatment i have not had any issues with the carbs, and like i said the only thing i drain/run dry any more is the snow blower, everything else just gets gas and go . . . . i like to think it helps since im NEVER that lucky

The Gremlin in my TV......help!
Wednesday January 5th I was cooking in the kitchen and I heard voices coming from a side bedroom that has been unoccupied for six months now. I go in and the Vizio TV is on. How the hell is that? I pick up the remote and attempt to shut it off. It won’t. The remote won’t work anything. I pull the plug. Ah, that did it. Plug it in again and the same thing happens, no control. Check the remote batteries, good. Go back and now the remote works. Everything is OK now.
Sunday January 9th I hear voices again. The TV is on again. Pull the plug. Put back in. Remote won’t work, oh, wait, I can change the channel, oh, now the power button works too. Everything is back to normal.

Get the girls up this morning, Few min later, hear a crash in the bathroom and come in to the toilet flushing and one twin hysterical (they are 7 now). Apparently one was trying to reach a cabinet above the toilet, knocked over a bunch of shit and an allergy medicine bottle fell in toilet and they flushed it. Was in enough that I couldn’t feel it after a toilet prostate exam. Will give credit to Mike for suggesting to try using the shop vac before ripping the toilet out and pushing it out from the other end. In the end, the shop vac was enough…more work averted…

I was never a fan of the entry room of our house. It still had the original general purpose rug and it was dark and dingy ending up as a storage room more than something usable. Over the last two years the pandemic had me working from home more and my daughter needed more room for hanging out. I finally got my act together and spent the last month and a half on weekends dry wall patching, painting, ripping out carpet and putting in new flooring. Replaced all the outlets and switches. Had lightning put in to make it brighter. Now the room is mostly done it’s onto the stairs and later the half bath.

Will be where I WFH and it can be used as a hang out room. Will probably build a few wheels in here too.

This reminds me of something that happened a while back.
I installed a ceiling fan with a remote in the living room (front of the house).
Shortly thereafter, my wife says she's waking up to find the ceiling fan on.
At first I was convinced it was just being left on when we went to bed,
but pretty soon it became apparent that wasn't the case.

Flash forward to multiple times dropping the fan and double/triple checking the wiring.

The culprit ultimately? Our neighbors across the street had installed same brand (and model?) fan in one of their front rooms,
and their remote was hitting us across the street.
Neither of us had changed the default remote code.

So pro DIY, I switched the code on our fan and remote,
but remembered what the default was.
Every once in a while when I'd be up late and feeling silly,
I'd plug the default code into our remote and turn their fan/light on.
Never stopped being fun.

So, do you have another TV of the same brand in the house?
