The DIY thread - DIYourself

Realized the back was coming off my wall mounted small parts bin so upgraded. Didn’t do a full OCD organization when swapping over but did teach my girls the difference between wood/machine screws and pan/counter sunk. Also was a good reminder of the odd screws/nuts/small things i had in there.

Didn’t want to mess around with this thing ripping out of the wall, so mounted a scrap piece of plywood (with kid drawings) and mounted it on that.

Note, this is not my bike small parts, other
than a crazy amount of headset and bb spacers .

The sill, not sure what to use great stuff or silicone. I can feel air coming in.

How large is the gap? It looks to be on the small side for great stuff or any other canned foam. Caulk seems like a better option, though I'd probably look at something more like a polyurethane caulk that is intended to bond to concrete/wood vs silicone. Another option would be one of the fancy air sealing tapes from Siga etc, but you'd want one of the ones that will bond to concrete.

Pre storm maintenance and prep the fleet yesterday.

Generator started right up (once I remembered to open the fuel cut off) 🤦🏻‍♂️. Snowblower hasn’t been used in 2 years and I left just a touch of gas in it which I didn’t realize. That snowblower is a beast to move when it’s off but hey plugged into generator and used electric start. Took a few tries and then I finally got it to start by pumping the primer bulb while cranking. Big puff of blue smoke Burning off 2 years of non use.

Now time for overdue maintenance. The gear selector always gets stuck on this machine. That’s because the hex shaft that the friction disc rides on gets rusty. Easy fix to sand it down and used “Red and Tacky” grease that all the snowblower YouTube guys recommend. This aerosol can is neat it comes out the little spray tube but turns into a gel like consistency. I ended up just spraying some onto my fingers and greasing the shaft (PHRASING!!) so it didn’t spray onto the pressure plate. Snowblower never shifted so smooth. Also did all the chains and gears.
Now the whole machine rolls so much better even when off.

Took the carb bowl off while the gas tank was empty and to my surprise it was perfectly clean. I’ll chalk that up to always using fuel additive cleaner with all my gas machines.

All this means I probably won’t need it tomorrow morning so you’re welcome.

Well Big Red (snowblower) performed flawlessly today and I was launching slushy snow 20-30’ while some of my neighbors were bogged down a bit.

Didn’t think this would be a maintenance item but on the last pull start to put it into the shed the start rope broke off. Lucky it was right at the base inside the recoil starter and 10 minutes later it’s fixed. Happy to take that as another small DIY win.

The wall in the picture had always had critters in it and sometimes when it rains alot it smells like wet animal. It is panelling and i intended to do this in the fall but didnt get to it. Since the room is 8’8”, it is has the break/trim.
I removed the section next to the fire place as there has been mouse activity there and i found Leaves/acorns and whatever else. I went above 4’ up and undid the seam of the upper section. Decided to do the entire lower section and a few bays over was a legit mouse quarters (which we knew from a few years ago). Other than that, just some decaying sill plate which i filled with some old Liquad nails i had after deciding to not replace it now. I also filled all the known holes with copper mesh and stapled the lower corner of the sill plate and studs with copper mesh. I also put some plywood over the existing holes. New insulation on the pays with the mouse houses.

Replaced the lower panelling (the divisions dont line up perfectly)0 and now just caulk and paint.
