The DIY thread - DIYourself

anyone have an idea what these are called?
they are like a plastic push rivet but don't have a center pin.
They are small - and are being used to hold two thin sheets of metal in place. non-structural, just positioning.
The metal was shifted, and cut through 4 of them.

I put the calipers on it and got some measurements - in the 4mm range
the thickness was under two, then started the journey

You can buy these in assortments from the river site. Or Temu, but I'm not judging. Both options suck.

"Push rivet" is the correct search term... https://www.mcmaster.com/products/rivets/rivet-type~push-in/reusable-push-in-rivets/

You can buy them in rubber, but they are typically nylon.

After a bit, I ended my journey - grabbed my pop-rivet kit. Tried out a couple until I found that 1/8x1/4 seemed right and sent it.
No interference, on-hand, totally not serviceable, done.

Thanks all !
I really wanted it factory, and probably dropped the resale value significantly, but since it has been in the rental pool......

Yes, but why did that happened? Looks almost like the fins burnt away…
I'unno. My best guess is I sucked something in the intake. I was using it when it made a different noise than usual and stopped moving air but I didn't see anything go in the back end. It'll remain a mystery. Regardless, now it'll go both wrrrr and woosh, instead of just wrrrr. At least for a while.

Bought this because it came used with a full set of tips, but it has clearly been dropped (original post was snapped at the threads.

Minimal machining necessary, since the piece was already 1/4"--just center drilled/tapped for the torch holder, bent, and threaded on the other end. Polished/attached.

Previous owner didn't include the clip for the torch, so had to cut one of those, too. No way I was going to pay $20 for a piece of mild steel with a hole in it.

A few of the tips weren't salvageable, but that's okay, as they were duplicates. #3 is pretty much all that's gonna get used at any rate.

I believe I need to replace a sprinkler valve. We turned on the system and one zone will not turn off regardless of the setting on the controller. Even unplugged, that one zone stays on. Before I attempt this, is there anything special I need to look out for?

Any signs before this happened? My old opener was struggling and eventually ripped the gear off the opener. Ended up changing the opener to belt drive and new springs. Much quieter now. This should be a PSA to all to unclip their opener and check their springs that they are working as intended. A broken spring to the head is a possibility if you're standing inside...

This is why all the installation instructions show the safety cable being required inside the spring.

I misinterpreted my wife’s garage being noisy for a while as something to do with the rollers. It probably was the spring the whole time but I didn’t even think that since I had changed them what seemed to be recently but it was more like 8 years ago. And her side gets used the most.

Lucky for me when it broke it only wiped out one of the pulleys and not the opener. And that no one was in the garage when it broke since the broken piece off the end was never found.

One side spring loop broke a few years ago and I temporarily patched it with a carabiner and an S hook. Now second loop explodes but it’s rigged properly so just have to lever the door up and replace the spring.

Winner! Even had the next size spring in stock. Cost: $0 but lotsa time….

Make sure you replace both at once so they have the same tension otherwise you might have some issues with the opener wearing out down the line.
