Things that make you frown :(

Someone I was friends with back in elementary school's claim to fame was getting busted on one of those hidden camera TV shows. He had an HVAC Co. and was caught on video doing something to a perfectly good AC and then giving the customer a several thousand dollar estimate.
I've seen those hidden camera skits with AC companies, I believe the one I saw was done by a News station and they had certified professional HVAC guys literally install (or just inspect, perhaps) new systems and then hide when the "bait" person calls a few companies over and I think only one of them ended up being honest, the others kept inventing bullshit to "fix".
People are scumbags.

You need to make money, we get it, but at least be honest enough to charge for the time to come out there... honesty is what keeps a business, in my opinion anyway.

Looks like he recovered. A quick FB search and most of his posts are photos and posts about his car restorations. Some nice cars and a really nice garage.

In their defense, if you call for a broken A/C, they're gonna try to find something, trying to be honest or not.

In a normal service call for a problem and the HVAC guy shows up, can't find a problem most customers won't pay for that service call. Especially if the problem is intermittent and comes back after the service guy leaves.

Bit different if they do something like just pull a wire connector off and see if the HVAC guy says it was a simple fix, loose wire, or if they try to charge for BS stuff.

After thinking about it, I remembered that all the professional did (prior to baiting) was unplug a simple connector in a very common place (I am not knowledgeable with HVAC) that should have been extremely easy to find, according to them.
Searching for it, I found the exact video I had seen. (Inside Edition news segment in New Jersey)

All they did was disconnect the low voltage circuit, so the unit doesn't come on when the thermostat calls for it. (disconnected at the AC unit outside).
Three companies passed this test, one failed, trying to bill them $1,700 instead of catching a really simple problem.

I understand what you mean when they come looking for a problem, and I misremembered thinking there was nothing wrong, when they actually did unplug it so it was not functional. They should at least be able to troubleshoot this and see a glaringly obvious problem staring at them when they open the unit and see something disconnected, no?

Hearing some stories from some HVAC, plumber and roofing people I know, it's shocking how they get away with outright fraud. And regularly with no checks and balances from any watchdog entity. How can people be so shitty?
You can report them to the Division of Consumers Affairs. Never had, too. If they have a lot of complaints, they can have their license suspended or revoked.

mid-year review (as if a year-end review isn't enough)

due July 18

i've been reminded 3x today alone... with an additional request to do it by the end of this week.

These things are such horse shit. And I’m pretty sure no one reads them at my company, I just copy/paste the same bullshit year over year to my “review”. Thankfully they just added a second for us too, great!

Friday went to send some documents at UPS and since they were going to a PO Box in Maine they said it needed to go USPS. They said it should be there by Monday:

A small letter still not out of NJ for $20. This is why USPS sucks, I just sent a 200 lb. piece of equipment by FedEx Freight to Germany 2nd Day freight for $175 and it arrived early, even with customs issues. SMH.

Crack the driver's side window of the '06 Honda CRV yesterday when I arrive at work. Took a mid-morning drive down the street to our other building. Window starts to go down and stops halfway. Actuate the switch several times hoping something will happen. Nope. Pull the fuse, still good. Pull the door panel off to see if it's possible to manually get the window up.

30min commute home on 295S with max AC on and the window halfway down. Pretty sure this power window motor/actuator was replaced in July '22. Call to the mechanic and no answer assuming he's laying low in the heat right now. Car is tarped in the driveway. Glad the window made the weekend roadtrip to Newport and back last weekend.

Yes, UPS ended it's SurePost service (which handed off to USPS for final mile delivery) on 1/1/25 with no warning to customers. USPS (and I think FedEx) are the only carriers that deliver to PO Boxes now. Working for Macy's and UPS being our ONLY eligible carrier for certain products/origins made this very annoying. Still waiting for Digital IT to put in a block to prevent orders from being placed for those specific products/origins...

It's a 110x worse on the other side, a while back I had about 20 people reporting to me and had to review each of their reviews. HR might not look at theirs, but they surely did mine, as it was their basis for raises, promotion and disciplinary programs. Then there's the ranking and poker party you have with other peer managers to split a tiny pot for everyone. I guess some people like this kinda stuff...

they call ours "check ins" now but its the same idea with just different words.

Good thing it's not important. 😡

@Steve Vai could have biked it to Maine and back by now.

When the town takes like 3 weeks to pick up all the bags of grass and leaves and then when they do finally show up they leave behind the bag that rips. gee I wonder why it fell apart.

I guess I should be thankful it wasn’t left all over the road like some other neighbors.
