Things that make you frown :(

Heres one for you guys....

So my son did a triathalon this morning in Morristown.....

Pool swim, then the kids head out on the road in this neighborhood for the bike portion....its an out and back on a quiet street. So his group of 9-10 year olds finish the swim....my son and the top 7 or so kids get on their bikes and head towards the road....Thats when I realize...there are 0 marshals, and 0 markings....so the first kid turns left rather than going straight and my son and 6 others follow.....it sudden occurs to a few of us parents they are going the wrong way and there are 0 race marshals/officials/whatever to stop them....so now we start running after them, but they are too far/fast. They headed to south street which is pretty busy and they just start riding down it still racing each other......So now we are far away having run after them...we tell a cop, then me and another dad run back and get in our cars to go and try to find them. Took out phone #s and headed in different directions.....Took us and the polica about 20 min but we finally found them near 287....They had realized they messed up, but then had no idea where to go.

It was a miracle that they werent run over.....

My son was pretty stoic about it, more pissed off that his race got screwed up as he was leading as he tells me. but the other kids were really upset....the moms were hysterical. 15 min in my car looking for my kid, ill tell you it was probably as freaked out as I have ever been as a parent.

As someone who has run bike races, im mind blown how bad these people fucked up. Like ok, people do shitty jobs of marking courses, but it usually doesnt end up putting little kids in danger of getting hit by cars.

Anyway, im fucking PISSED off right now.
 
Wow. In the sue-happy state of NJ, how did no one address this in the planning? Some one should be publicly stoned for this.

So I talked to two people today.....

Im not gung ho to go sue people or anything like that....but JFC, someone better learn something from this experience. I talked to one of the cops on the Morris twp PD.....They didnt know the event was happening. They found out when they were suddenly asked to go find kids lost on the road. Then I also talked to the town admin. This event was being done by the morris county rec department, there was no outside promoter. The admin is the one who is in charge. He let me know that there was a break down and the police were not there.....which to me is political speak for...whoops, someone forgot to call them. On top of the fact that there was not one person, cone, marker, tape, etc......NOTHING on the road for anyone to follow. Anyway, they fucked up....big time.....they just got VERY, like EXTREMELY lucky nobody got hurt.

When my son did it - one of the tri clubs was the sponsor. Person at every turn on the bike and run course.
Same at the Somerset hills one (they closed the roads) - and at denville (cones) and lots of support.

was transition even set up for an in/out ?
they didn't have any club support because it was the weekend of the NJ State Tri Championship.....
Really dropped the ball on this one -

I'd also ask if they had anyone that was SafeSport certified - 8yo and younger can not be left to find their own parents.
Along with a few other important items that go along with it (concussion recognition, and abuse recognition)

Someone should lose their job.
 
I know that area really well, having lived just up the street off of South St for a few years. I was always happy to be out of that immediate area when I'd go out for a ride from home. I was also was in a car accident right in that area where someone came around the turn on South St not paying attention and rear ended me at 40mph. It's a busy, chaotic section of roads and people are driving fast. Very glad to hear that nobody was hurt and I unfortunately agree that this sounds like negligence that someone should be held accountable for.

well first of all glad Bob and all the kids were safe thats the main thing.

but after that, i hope someone marched into the Rec Department office and demanded they all get fired. I would be that guy at the next town council bullshit political meeting making sure these people get held accountable. In our town the Rec dept and staff are employees and they work for the town administration.

on top of all the things that Pat mentioned like proper training for supervising kids and all the protocols that come with it. Permits? insurance? Its not like it was some group of parents that got together and decided to play triathlon together. this was a town organized event for gods sake. I guess all these rules didnt apply for this event.

imagine one of the local race promoters tried something like this... sigh.

p.s. Tell Bob we all know we would have won anyway.

unrelated but related. I hired 2 recent engineering grads. Of things I'm training them on I told them 2 big ones and it sort of relates to current day and sort of to this. 1) If you can't do it 100% yourself don't expect it and don't promise it......expect it won't happen if you don't make it happen 2) you are in-part a paid skeptic.....look for problems everywhere. Too many people think "someone" will do "something". I'm super glad this did not turn out badly.
 
Frown to the guy one cube row over at work.

He clearly comes from the gym or a workout some morning ls and while he wearing his office clothes that look like he didn’t dry off enough in the shower (business work shirt sweaty) he uses the narrow area between the cubicle wall and the windows to hang his wet towel and lay out his gym clothes to dry ! Fucking ewww.

When I was a gym rat I would stuff everything in double plastic bags and hang it all up at home.
