Just saw this as well in one of my mtb group feeds. This isn't the first time the park has been closed due to black bears becoming aggressive, interesting that they specifically mention dog owners who's dogs are off leash. I see that all the time when riding in there.

This closure was bound to happen - If it was mountain biking related there would be a huuuuuuuuge out cry ... I also see a lot of dogs not on leash at Lewis Morris.

Saw this on the morning news and was coming on to post, but glad to see it was already here.
However, please excuse the thread drift, but what does everyone do when they come across dogs off leash? Do you bring it to their attention or ride past? (I do the latter)
As much as it annoys me cause I try to follow the rules to maintain access, these people don’t have to abide & have no repercussions.

Unclip and get ready to kick. I've had so many run ins with off leash dogs it's a shock when they are on a leash. I'm a huge dog lover and it drives me insane.

Tbf I usually don't say much probably because I'm also usually breaking a rule at my local park so 🤷🏼‍♂️ no leg to stand on.

as a mountain biker, I generally just try to stay under the radar at the tourne.....Its totally surrounded by VERY VERY expensive real estate and people who I am sure would love to see us out of there. Plus I see ALOT of bad behavior by mountain bikers there in general. Buzzing hikers, riding hiking only trails, blaring music, building illegal downhill runs......Dog walkers know the rules...they know that they arent enforced....so anything that I say to them isnt going to matter.

I have been attacked and bitten by an unleashed dog at the tourne, cut up my ankle and destroyed a pair of my irreplaceable custom MTBNJ socks!!! I dont get mad at dogs, owners on the other hand.

For me it was a bigger issue trail running. Once had a dog chase me for almost a mile - it wasn't aggressive but I wasn't stopping so the stupid owners could get their dog. Hopefully it taught them a lesson.

man :smh:....so your going to punish the poor dog by having it get lost in the woods?

I once rode by that shady house up the road from the Iron Gate at stephens....unleashed GIANT pit bull starts chasing me...I was on my SS so I was spinning like mad but I couldnt outrun him....but thankfully when he lunged to bite me my knee hit him on his chin enough that he wasnt able to bite me.....he continued to chase me from the house to almost the railroad tracks, which is FAR, I dont know, maybe 1/2 mile? But once he gave up the chase, I stopped, got off my bike and he was very friendly....I suppose I could have just left him far from his house, but thats punishing a dog with a BAD owner. So I rode back to the house with the dog, he followed me. I explained what happened to the owner and reminded him that he has an unleashed HUGE pit bull who chases people...do you like this dog? because "they" will take him from you and put him down when he bites someone. Anyway, im not going to be the reason that a dog is lost out in the woods. Yes, its the owners fault, but im not going to punish the dog for it.

Haha no this was the sourlands - 5 mile white trail loop. I could hear the dopes coming and yelling. Eventually the dog stopped and started going back. A dog isn't getting lost in that place.

So I think Tourne is absolutely one of the worst parks with unleashed dogs, not because it isn't bad at other places but because it is small and heavily used. Most of the dogs are pretty good, but I find the little ones are the worst and so yappy. I don't bother saying anything because of many of the reasons stated above. Personally, I am scared to death to let one of my well-behaved dogs off leash because I don't trust people not to create an issue and endanger losing my dogs.
I do want to eventually train my new puppy to be a trail dog and be off-leash, but that will never happen at places like the Tourne or other heavily used systems because people suck most dogs don't.

A dog owner's lack of planning to encounter other trail users does not constitute an emergency for me when they do. Ride on.

Most dog owners in Tourne want to share the park. The greatest risk I have found is dogs who derp in front of me, and I almost run them over. It is interesting that they are closing the park to everyone when they could just say "no walking dogs in Tourne until further notice".

That is a common park managers reaction. It’s easier to close the whole thing up instead of addressing a problem correctly. That works with other issues as well and why some are always working to keep access.
