Wawayanda Group Ride

Yeah, sorry about the ridiculous climb up SplitRock, we were looking for Wall and ended up on SR. You're welcome - I had a great time leading and it was great meeting some new people. The three remaining from the group went on to ride up Rattlesnake, down Tombstone and across and up Pickle and White Dot and finished on Sitting Bear, 14.6 - 15 miles depending on who's Strava you look at. We sorta did Pete's initial plan. Thank you Pete for setting this ride up - had a great time!
Thanks again to all who showed up. Originally we had 22 yes/interested, 13 actually went, 7 I can remember names of. And thanks @w_b for bringing Mike & Mike. And a great thanks to @huffster and @Off The Road Again for their GREAT leadership!

Thanks for leading. I want to hit some of those more tech trails next time. Some folks expressed an interest in a Jungle Habitat or Ringwood group ride. Maybe someone can post it. I don't know how to post a new link or send a PM yet on this site.

Well, this was an interesting experience for me, being my first group ride and all.

As it turned out I was one of the most familiar with the park. So, I got the caboose - aka "sweeper". It didn't take long before we had a "mechanical" and a "physical", so the group got split in half fairly quickly. That left 7 of us at the back half. I reached a point where I had to send 5 ahead and go back-track to get someone that had run back to make a repair at the car. Once I got him, the 2 of us rode our asses off trying to catch-up.

We thought about a short-cut to catch the others, but I worried we'd miss them and leave them lost. So, we stuck with the planned route. We never caught up, but somehow we rolled into the furnace area first. How the fuck did that happen? After hanging with Pete for awhile, my lone riding buddy had to split, so I was suddenly in my usual space - riding solo.

Just as I went to head off for some more miles, 3 of the other 5 rolled in. They had taken a wrong turn and ended up doing one of the toughest trails in the park - Rockadendron. Ironically, this is the cut-off that I had considered earlier. The other 2 had split off from them after that. I'm not sure where they ended up, but from reading the posts above - they survived. I offered to take the last few for a few more miles. One joined, while the others took a bail-out option pretty soon.

All in all, we did about 13 miles - well I did. That included the back-track. I guess I learned what the role of "the sweeper" is yesterday. I think I also learned that a big group is destined to be shattered. I also learned that exchanging some more phone numbers might be a wise idea if somehow you want to try and regroup at some point.

I'm glad to hear everybody made it. I'd be glad to show people around Waway a little more if this time wasn't all you hoped it would be. This park is awesome and we only skimmed the surface. So, PM if you want to try and coordinate.

We tried to figure out what happened to you as you disappeared. I have never been on a ride then encountered so many mechanical issues. I feel bad for one of our south Jersey counterparts that broke down in the first mile after driving 2 hours to get there. Thanks for sweeping.

^ I had told someone (don't remember names) where I was going and gave some forward direction, but apparently some of the message was lost. It was the "south Jersey counterpart" I went back to get. I figured 5 of you with maps were better off then 1 unfamiliar person riding solo. Waway is an easy place to get mixed up. It all worked out. Anyway, it was nice to put some names and faces together and a chat a bit pre-ride. I think I will try to mix in some "riding with others" going forward.

Thanks again to @Kaleidopete for planning this.

Rockadendron FTW! Noting but rocks rhodos and singletrack!

@huffster , I saw on the strava flyby, we missed the left off Cherry Ridge Road. that was right before you would have caught us. We wound up on RockaDD when you went left off Cherry Ridge and went around us. We went back up Red Dot to yellow to the furnace, where we met back up... I had right about 10mi on the clock back at the lot.

thanks again, place really is amazing...

the strava flyby is pretty cool, I enjoyed seeing the ride!

This ride was a great introduction to Waywayanda. I'm going back for sure. Finally converted to tubeless tires after being back into mountain biking for 4 years and held up great on this ride. Now I know what I was missing.

Sounds like it was pretty eventful to say the least

This babysitting gig is hard.

Anyone wanna go again this Sunday earlier say 8?

Need to be in church at noon

@ridgehog
@domo

I have some things planned for Saturday that are weather dependent. If weather is good Saturday, I should get those done (or progressed enough) to join you Sunday morning. I might not be able to make that call until Saturday though. We can leave from Cherry Ridge if you like and I'll show you "the goods" if I can make it.

I heard that @huffster is a monster rider and will be too fast for my slow fat ass. Lol

Hopefully I don't get a last minute gig to cover in Saturday night and be able to casually ride waway finally

Pete are you racing jungle?

No, I don't race, and I have other plans that day. I might just show up early to visit.

Hey there, Alex the mechanic who set up your tubeless and new drivetrain, literally made this so I could check in on how your ride went and how the turner performed. Glad to see it went well, and I'll definitely try and join you guys on one of these rides soon! Maybe I can assist with some of the mechanical issues you're having!

Dude, you transformed my Turner into an all mountain beast. A friend of mine that went on the ride said that I now have no excuse if I am not able to clear everything. Held up and worked flawlessly. Always an open invite you will just to take an easy on this mere mortal.
