Wawayanda State Park Conditions

The trails are still great today. I think studs are needed though. Laurel trail is quite icy, but very ride able. Here are photos of Little Bear, which looks great. I don't know how long these conditions will last, but nothing is soft and muddy yet. Iron Mountain is good too.

So....above photos show Wawa yesterday at 25°and snow. Well here is today's photo is the Spring turtle! 65° this afternoon. There is still ice on the lake and ice fisherman out there, but this turtle just don't care, he wants Spring! Just like many of us.

I have been working at clearing trail in Wildcat the past few days. Constantly getting off the bike and taking off the pack to get at the saw. I kept thinking of the cool setup that kaleidopete has. Saw mounted to the front rack. @Kaleidopete...I hope you hook up with blackbear...i,m sure they could benefit from your enthusiasm and experience.

Wawayanda today, Saturday 4/4. I hiked the Double Pond to Red Dot to Cherry Ridge to Twin Bridges today. These trails are surprisingly good! DP is wet and muddy just before the long bridge all the way to Red Dot trail head. RD is wet in spots, with some snow / slush, but it clears up nicely for 90% of the trail, but there are about 3 blowdowns to navigate around. Twin Bridges is the better trail of the two. Wet in a few spots and only one blowdown to get around, but this trail isn't easy on a good day, but it's in pretty good shape. I did some unauthorized trail maintenance today by moving the long 2" branches and smaller off the trails, hope I didn't offend anyone that normally maintains these trails. Larger obstructions are 8" to 12" around and will need a saw. Both of these trails have their soggy spots and I'd try and walk around them to stay dry and not destroy the trail, but a lot of these trails are totally rideable.

Rode today as it's a beautiful day! I rode Cherry Ridge from Banker to Tombstone trail. When the trails were good, they were very very good, when they were bad they were horrid! Cherry was mostly good, there were puddles, but you could ride the dry leafy edge just fine. Approaching Cabin trail it was very wet and a little muddy, but these trails see quads and motorcycles too. Going up Cabin trail it was a river giving you the choice to ride the hard stony center, or the soft muddy edges. There was still ice, so that was a choice, hard and dry. I rode Cabin to the power line to Tombstone, that was fine, as was Tombstone itself. Took Tombstone (where there is one big blow down) to Turkey Ridge. Both trails are awesome. Then I headed back down Cherry Ridge to Ferber Circle and made a right on another unmarked trail that went to a Party spot in the woods. That's it. 7.5 miles and a great day.

Blow down

That log should be ridden !!!

Laurel trail today was muddy in spots, you'd get 25 or 100 feet spots of wet and mud, especially the beginning by the furnace. I also did Sitting Bear which is in fantastic shape. There has been recent TM, cutting up some large blow downs. Great job by ??

Laurel trail

Black Bear Cycling! We have been getting the trails ready for the season and the races. We are going to start to have public TM sessions on Mondays called "Black Monday". More to follow asap. We will start the public sessions in ~ 1 week which will be food for paydirt.

Conditions are really hit and miss at Wayway right now. Some trails are really good and others are really soft. I would avoid Wayway for 7-10 days. Hit up Ringwood where the trails are riding really well.

Thursday 4/9
William Hoefernon trail is pretty good today all the way to Banker, not too muddy and just a few obstacles. Double Pond is pretty muddy all the way from Banker to the furnace.

The park is in pretty good shape. Rode what we are thinking of using for the Spring Cleaning course tonight and overall single track is in good condition with some softer spots on the double track trails like old coal. If you ride there this weekend just tread lightly in these areas and ride closer to the edge. They may even be better by the weekend.

Saturday 4/11
Took Pumphouse trail today from the park gate area. It's not worth riding because there is a blow down about 3/4 of a mile in and then there is a stream to cross about 1 mile in, but the rock crossing is under water. I had to turn around and go back.

Valuable insight. When that rock crossing is impassable, its pretty much a matter of going all the way back from where you came. I'm unaware of another route around that side of the lake without taking to the road. So, its back around to the other side of the lake. I guess its going to take awhile for the high water over there to subside.

Did Banker trail today and it's in great shape, it's had recent trail maintenance, cutting laurels and blow downs. Six inch diameter trees cut away with an ax, first time I've see that on trails.

^ A buddy of mine carries an axe in his Jeep. He keeps that thing razor sharp and he swings it like he was born with it. I swear he can chop through a 1 foot log in under a minute. He'll do that twice if he needs to remove a section. I've asked him why he doesn't carry a chainsaw. He likes the adrenaline and there's no gas to stink up his Jeep.

Today's report is still on Banker trail. Today I rode the WHOLE trail from Ferber Circle on Cherry Ridge Rd. to the end at Banker Rd.
Everything looks good until you get to the end. All the laurel has been trimmed and in places I felt like I was touching on both sides, I can't imagine how tight it was before it was trimmed. I remembered the last part just before Banker Rd as being VERY wet, and today didn't disappoint me. Had to cross a 8 foot stream that was about 10 inches deep. Pretty hard bottom though until the farthest shore which was mud. So I got a soaker and muddy feet, but the ride was well worth it. Anybody else wanting to do this ride should take Plymouth trail to the left as you approach the end of Banker trail. It was built to circumvent this crappy ending to a otherwise nice trail, and to keep you in the park proper, because the way I went brings you right out onto Banker rd. Whereas if you take Plymouth you stay in the park and if you want to you can make a right on Doublepond trail and it too brings you right out onto Banker rd where I wound up. I didn't take Plymouth today because I was on a mission to GPS track the actual Banker trail for my own records.
