I have been saving some money for my mountain biking and I am looking to get some essentials I have been neglecting buying (i have been testing my luck)

All I have when I ride is my back pack (has spot for a camelback but i don't have one), and a water bottle.

I certainly need some more essentials such as c02 inflator, spare tubes, multi tool.

Do you all recommend any specific ones? Is there anything else I should definitely get? i have about 400 dollars I could spend, but I would like to save some maybe even half for some upgrades on my bike (rockhopper 08) or I would like to get cleats and pedals.

You said C02 inflator but you can get a small pump pretty cheap.

Don't forget a Quick link for you chain, it's a much easier trailside fix than trying to press a pin.

Wrap some duct tape around your seatpost for those 1001 uses. I use it to strap rogue trailbuilders to trees 😉.

A film can with a few spare bolts is a lifesaver out in da woods too.

must haves:
-mini pump for mtb
-threaded co2 cartridges for road
-big multitool w/ chain tool
-clipless pedals and shoes
-spare quick link
-water bottle cages or camelback depending on how you roll
-spare inner tubes
-tire lever (quick stick)
-gloves
-padded shorts

just get whatever your local shop carries

Clipless shoes is very good upgrade for the bike itself. I recommend the Shimano clips with the adjustable setting. Makes getting used to them much easier.

As others have said, I learned to always ride with a mini-pump, spare tube, multi-tool with chain tool and tire levers, a chain link, spare rear derailleur hanger, and a few Gu's. I also want to start carrying a compass and a map.

Ummm.. I ride w. a pump/ LED light/ bike lock/ camel back/ Swiss army knife... But most important.... friends that are prepare for a major catastrophe !!!!! 😀

Thanks for all the responses! Fortunately I do have a helmet.

How long does a tube normally take to pump with a hand pump?
