Our Brother printer recently started giving us this message, sometimes several times a day. Not sure if someone is actually trying to hack into our wifi or if this is something else.

does that mean you don't have a range extender? 😉

I could start guessing - at least the printer is asking. Some routers find printers and implement IPP,
so devices on the wifi can see it (depending on setup, they might not be able to "see" it directly)
Routers that had serial ports to connect printers were popular for a short time.

You can run 'fing' and find the devices that are on your network (phone app)

If you want to be safe, turn off the wifi on the printer and run it wired to your network

Correct, no range extender or Linksys here.

So the IT guy in me that’s always suspicious of things makes me think someone nearby is either intentionally or unintentionally trying to connect to your printer via that device (range extender).

Took the liberty of googling this for you :

To turn off Wi-Fi Direct on your Brother MFC-J5845DW printer, navigate to the printer's control panel, select "Network," then "Wi-Fi Direct," and finally, select "Off" to disable the feature.

Here's a more detailed breakdown:
  • Access the Network Settings:
    • On the printer's control panel, navigate to the "Settings" menu.

    • Select "Network".
  • Locate Wi-Fi Direct:
    • Within the "Network" menu, select "Wi-Fi Direct".
  • Disable Wi-Fi Direct:
    • In the "Wi-Fi Direct" menu, select "Off" to disable the feature.
This way you can keep the Wi-Fi on if your still using it but disable the direct capability.

After you change this setting restart the printer and check that it saved the new setting.

One late night i was sitting watching tv when I heard noises coming from the office down the hall. Scared the hell out of me. I go in there and see that it is the printer printing something out. It was a resume and the name and address were of a neighbor of mine. I'm sure it was a mistake but I was spooked for a minute. Then figured out how to change the setting that allows anyone to connect to it.

My office complex had an asshole in one of the units. He'd watch for people to park in one of his parking spots for a few minutes and run out and put a DON'T PARK HERE sticker on the windshield on the driver's side when the driver went inside a building. My old coworker connected to their printer and just printed pictures of dicks every day until the paper ran out.

He stopped when the FBI raided their office for some big fraud, apparently he was ripping off the Jets or Giants and they cleared out.
