I guess i could go put it on the bench and pull the valves. i was expecting much worse. #1 is on the left.
no sign of a blown head gasket or crack - i didn't expect that anyway. Cyl walls look fine.
i just don't feel like working on this now. I have a couple days to remove the working parts, then off it goes.
i do have one more idea. not pretty.
Looks like it should run. Very clean for raw water cooled. Gotta be a freshwater boat.well....

Was there a leak down test?
hissing from the carb on cyl 1. I was sure i was going to find the head rusted to crap.
looking at getting a gasket set now.
I think my little home mechanic nephew did something i didn't pick-up on. more later.
i saw a lash setting sequence someplace. gotta find it.
I'd be leaning towards sticking valve too, especially since you said it was hissing out the carb. I have no problem helping with the floor if you get it running well enough to warrant it. And what's up with your nephew wanting to put a new engine in, I thought he wanted to be a mechanic?
One of the more important issues here is how much confidence will you have in that motor?
If you are sure you caught all problems, great.
You don't want to call 800-4-SEATOW.
Nah.Does this thread replace the "Queen wants a red convertible" thread?
FTFYNah.
Clean start now just means clean off the boat and hope it doesn't hurt
