Clean Start

Well, i got it to backfire, and ignite the ether left on the carb. that was exciting.
Pulled the valve cover gasket - looks great.

I would check those clearances now that you’re there.

I guess i could go put it on the bench and pull the valves. i was expecting much worse. #1 is on the left.
no sign of a blown head gasket or crack - i didn't expect that anyway. Cyl walls look fine.
i just don't feel like working on this now. I have a couple days to remove the working parts, then off it goes.

i do have one more idea. not pretty.

Looks like it should run. Very clean for raw water cooled. Gotta be a freshwater boat.

Was there a leak down test? Did you crank it with the valve cover off and verify all rockers were rockin? Is oil getting up to the rockers?

#1 piston up to mid stroke and soak with MM oil in cylinder for 2 days. Work back and forth with breaker bar on crank pulley. Gently beat the piston top with a mallet to a wooden dowel maliciously a few times. Same with the valve stems. Reassemble. Pray. Twisty twist the distrib to the magical spot and you should be good. If not cost you gaskets.

hissing from the carb on cyl 1. I was sure i was going to find the head rusted to crap.
looking at getting a gasket set now.
I think my little home mechanic nephew did something i didn't pick-up on. more later.

i saw a lash setting sequence someplace. gotta find it.

Maybe the valves and seats just need some love and it’s vroom. That’d be $$$.

I have seen a lot worse. That’s a project that is mostly elbow grease and time probably.

It is more fun to have stuff that just runs, unless you’re looking for a project.

I'd be leaning towards sticking valve too, especially since you said it was hissing out the carb. I have no problem helping with the floor if you get it running well enough to warrant it. And what's up with your nephew wanting to put a new engine in, I thought he wanted to be a mechanic?

I think he assumes I have funds to short circuit hard work. Hasn't learned he has the order wrong.
