are you looking to just read/clear CEL codes? are you looking to see other systems (ABS, airbag ect ect)

if you just want to read/clear CEL then you can get pretty much any $15 scanner on amazon that does that and youll be fine, if you want more diagnostic options it becomes a more complicated decision.

I have the CenTec older version of this one. Does pretty much what I need, read, and reset codes. Got the ABS version because it was on sale at the time and got it for $100. Works as it should, when I need it.

Other systems would be cool, along with app diagnostic capabilities.

Cannot recommend this one enough. It is a generic OBD2 reader. Requiring no additional work than the app, you get all the OBD2 PID's, realtime datalogging, custom dash's, freeze frame data, mode 6 data.

Will not get you into manufacture specific PIDs for the most part, but there is community support for select makes. This also uses the standard ELM327 chip, with much wider community support if you wanted to use different scan or flash software than the recommended one.

i had the previous version of that for a long time (previous version did CEL, ABS, SRS codes, live data, freeze frame data) and it worked great, i prefer to have the unit on its own so that its not relying on any other systems to work. This unit would be a perfect fit your basic shade tree type work.

when it went for a swim last year i replaced it with a unit with bi-direcitonal control and wireless communication to the OBD port. Im not sure of your inclination to do your own repairs and diagnostics, but if you only do simple stuff this would be WAY overkill

Everyone here is better with engines than I am so where can I send gasoline to be tested?

My 1-year-old Jeep Wrangler began to run poorly while away on vacation, I took it to the dealer there and was told that it was contaminated gas. They flushed it and on the way home after about 200 miles issues came back so I need to confirm if it was actually contaminated gas or if they were just lazy and claimed that to avoid a lot of warranty work and well it was the easy way out.

Probably this. I don't know the answer, but I avoid dealers like the plague. Warranty cases are of course an exception, and because it's only 1 year old, I'd probably say take it in again. If it was my car, I'd probably dump in gas water remover, octane booster, and/or fuel injector cleaner and see what happens. Not necessarily in that order.

For those 200 miles, it ran as it normally did? They filled it up or did you go to your usual spot? Regular gas or 91/93?

They removed the tank and completely flushed the system or so it said. It had half a tank when picked up and I filled up with regular at some random gas station in Dartmouth. Brought it to a dealer to maintain warranty for any issues, but now they are kinda threatening bad gas will void any warranty bs. I have a sample they gave me, not that I trust it, but no choice if it comes back good then they are screwed and time to lawyer up.

Brought it to a dealer to maintain warranty for any issues, but now they are kinda threatening bad gas will void any warranty bs. I have a sample they gave me, not that I trust it, but no choice if it comes back good then they are screwed and time to lawyer up.

Try a different dealer? There's too many potential causes other than bad gas, which should really resolve when you get new gas. If it doesn't take premium, try a tank of premium and run that through. Otherwise a simple thing would be check the air filter for clog. Harder stuff to check if you don't wrench, fuel filter , o2 sensor, MAF sensor, clogged cat, clogged fuel injectors. etc. Many of these are unlikely due to the age, unless you have a ton of miles already.

I believe that seriously bad gas could screw up you O2 sensor as well (from my home mechanic past days). Could the bad gas have messed up you o2 sensor and did they change it when they slushed the system? I defer to more experienced/real mechanics on this, but I thought it would be worth mentioning.

with all the rain we got the past week its likely ALOT of fuel tanks have water in them right now.

2 stations in town had water in them last year, one went out of business bc of it. the station i worked at years ago always had inches of water at the bottom of the tank.

unfortunately all the gas i seem to get is "bad". remember that thing on the pump that says max ethanol content 10%? every place i get is 15% or more, recently as high as 37%. doesnt really make a difference since my truck is flex fuel, but paying a premium for less energy dense fuel when its advertised as something else is not ok

how do you know what content of ethanol you actually got? does the flex fuel have a dashboard readout for it?

I will try a different dealer but this dealer has essentially said that if anyone finds out they claimed bad gas it will void all warranty so don't call Jeep. Sounds like BS wanna test it and take legal action if good. They claimed color was the obvious indicator tonight I poured some gas out of my gas can in my shed and it looked identical so really questioning what they are saying and need a test. The costs are adding up quick and need to reduce my out of pocket with test results

It seems a bit strange that they filled it halfway. Seems like if they removed it, it would either be almost empty or they would have filled it?

P.S. This is why I hate the current state of dealer interactions. Even when I took the Vette to the dealer in for the battery issue, they were looking to charge me for a new battery. I said, hey it's under warranty still and the service "manager" was like "Oh yes I see that now, of course it's covered". No doubt they would have charged me the $200 for a new battery if I didn't speak up. Bullshit.
