Winter Gear ??

How can this really work, and for how long?

I'll never actually try it, since it goes against everything I have ever lived and learned. No such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing.

If you are talking about the nitrile gloves, it keeps the sweat from soaking the glove and reducing the insulating value.

If ya sweat a lot, the gloves will hold a bunch of water, and taking them off mid ride when really cold is a problem. I usually bring an extra pair.

I've not been down there as of yet.

What's the elevation? Is that a factor at all?
2,200 feet in town, then goes up from there another 2,500 feet or so. Definitely in the mountains but we're not at the top or anything where we live. It does seem to be rainy and lots of tree cover. Come on down!

For winter riding below 35 i'll put my socks on then put my feet in plastic bags and cut them to make booties. The cleats transfer the cold, that is the big issue. Switching to flats just for the winter is a good idea.
Good winter shoes (Like the Lake winter boots) separate the cleat from the rest of the shoe so you're not putting the bottom of your foot on a metal plate. They basically mold the plate in the bottom rubber sole.

I’ve got it all and it all works until you sweat. Flats and an insulated work boot is a great combo when combined with wool socks. I have a pair of Wolvhammer boots, but the soles don’t lend enough grip on the flat pedals which makes them better for clipless. Keeping your feet warm starts at your legs, layer up and I have gaiters that work well as wind lockers that help as well.

As far as hands go, Pogies rule. I have a pair from Revelate and combined with a lite winter glove and I have warm hands when I’m riding my fatbike. I also have heated gloves which work well for a limited time due to batteries.

I may need more warmth than others due to my illness, but these things keep me on the bike all winter.

I also find my Wolvhammer boots to be a horrible PITA to don and remove. They're reserved for super cold conditions.

Whichever shoe type chosen - don't leave them in the car overnight.
Starting with them warm (meaning not frozen) helps -

esp if they have any carbon parts.....😉

i put mine in a ski boot warming bag.

Personally I feel a super thin wool glove liner is way better than those rubberish doctor gloves. If your hands are sweating that much and it's freezing outside, you're fucked. Same thing for plastic bags on your feet... bad idea.

I got these hart goggles at walmart for $15 they work awesome for riding and cleaning snow as much as they are useful in the summer for protection. Very minimal yet they still work with glasses.

PI AmFib non-shammy long pants work great for me. I have two pairs that I've had for like 15 years. I wear a pair of regular riding shorts underneath and they work anything from low 40's to below zero for me.
I have a pair of non chamois winter tights Amfib that I have been wearing for at least the last 8-9 years they are so dope and I am never cold in them. I like to wear my summer bibs underneath to keep comfortable without overheating.

They were like new handoffs from someone who dropped some weight and they have seen 1,000s of cold miles. The seat is starting to finally wear out but after 100s of times in the wash they are still warm.

Does anyone have the redesigned 45Nrth Wolvhammer or Wolfgar? On their website they state they are now compatible with flat pedals and I’m wondering how well they work on flats. I used to ride the Wolfgar with clips but have since moved to flats and I’m looking for a new winter boot that works decent with flat pedals.

Not sure about the 45Nrth but I use Five Ten trailcross shoes with gore-tex. Mine are a 1/2 size larger than normal so I can wear them with thick wool socks. They've been great in the snow and in 20º weather. And they grip really well with flat pedals.

The bike specific flat pedal winter stuff just seems to expensive. My best experience so far has been a pair of Colombia boots I got on sale for around 50 bucks . Grip pedals really well and are plenty warm . Little flexy but that just ads to grip on the pedal .

I really don't get cold after building the high rises in AC. Working outside for 8 hours in the cold and wind. I can ride for 2 hours.
I wear thermal bids, underarmour shirt, thermal jersey, wind breaker, REI lobster gloves which I only put on under 28 degrees, a cap that covers the ears and
the toe warmers that you put in your shoes about 45 degrees.

This list makes it sound like you get cold pretty easy.
