Winter Gear ??

Hell yeah! Frozen trails and Less people. Especially first thing in the morning. I prep for winter riding by loading up all my stuff in the car wearing shorts and a t-shirt. I wear an Under Armor Cold Gear as my base layer, a wind breaker with a high collar over that and a hoodie over that. I've ridden in 0 degrees with even colder wind chill and never had a problem. Only problem is my eyes tearing if I go too fast.

Year round rider here too.

Learning to dress for the weather takes some trial and error. I prefer to start off a bit on the colder side, if you dress too heavily you will be soaked in sweat once you warm up and then you've got real problems. Below freezing is easier than riding in 40's and 50's with precipitation or wet roads/trails. I find my feet get cold by the end of the rides no matter what I do, although I have not yet gone as far as heated insoles or socks, maybe this is the year?

Did anyone mention "you want to be a little chilly right before you start the ride"
Fuck that. As someone who's always cold I over-layer at the start and just remove layers.

And then have them when there's a flat, the shaded side of a mountain, going downhill, etc etc.

Just don't be overdressed too long where you sweat.

You will keep us posted on how things are going on the trails down there?

While it's beautiful and there's less traffic, it's not THAT much warmer...

Like many others, I bought these and they are really nice.
Thanks to @stb222 and @JimN for posting about them.

For winter riding below 40 i'll put my socks on then put my feet in plastic bags, insert them in the shoe, then cut them to make booties. The cleats transfer the cold, that is the big issue. Switching to flats just for the winter is a good idea.

For hands i have used nitrile gloves as a wind blocker under gloves, it works ok.

I bought neoprene diving gloves to experiment, they work ok but I don't recommend them, they still get cold in the low 40 degree weather.

How can this really work, and for how long?

I'll never actually try it, since it goes against everything I have ever lived and learned. No such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing.
