Most overhyped bike trend?

I disagree, for racing....especially enduro....god its so nice to be able to change gear with a slight touch.....hold the button down and sweep thru the gears....No cables to deal with, clutch that releases so I can smash the derailleur on a rock and it still works (I have done this several times now). Not something that is as valuable as a dropper of course, but I like them.

agreed! i crashed last month, landed the bike on the derailleur, hangar broke off and everything, derailleur was just fine, worth every penny.

I'd say the over-categorization (is this a word?) of bikes in general is an overhyped trend...
  • Downhill bike
  • Enduro bike
  • Trail Bike
  • XC Bike
  • Downcountry bike (gasp!)
  • All-mountain bike
  • Road bike
  • All-road bike
  • Endurance Bike
  • Aero bike
  • Race bike
  • Gravel bike
  • Gravel race bike
  • Gravel adventure bike
  • Bikepacking bike
  • Bikepacking gravel adventure race bike... 🤣
Did I miss any?

Anymore they all just blend together & become hype for companies to convince you that you need another bike...(which I'm sad to admit, if you were to look in my garage, has worked on me) 🤣
Great list. Another one to add, which IMHO is way overhyped. I have seen these out west on the slopes and wonder what a yard sale on these would do to nearby riders and skiers 😳

For me it makes recommending bikes much easier. I could name 2-3 bikes in each of those categories and they all ride wildly differently than the category up or down from it.

When you start with "I want an XC bike" you have to drill down another 2 layers to figure what you actually want. Do you want something like the Spur? Or something like the Xcaliber? No one needs a bike in every category of course. Certain brands take it to different levels too. Santa Cruz has a bike every 10mm in travel which feels like a bit much.

Electronic shifting. Can’t think of a moment where I thought, “Man, I could have really used a battery operated rear derailleur right there.” Same for seat posts. Just more devices to clog up your charging station. Unless you got weak thumbs, I don’t think they offer that much improvement over their cable counterparts.
Micro adjust, no broken cables, crash protection and I have a lot of neuropathy in my hands so effortless button pushing justifies it for me. Dropper posts? It took a long time but @UtahJoe finally convinced me and I even have one on my rigid SS 😁

27.5+. Not "overhyped" in the sense that they sucked, but I think almost every other trend mentioned has had a longer life than 27.5+. Maybe they'll make a comeback in a few years.
27.5+ rule on e bikes! People that didn’t like plus tires tried them on 28-30 mm rims. To properly run an 2.8-3.0 you need rims over 35mm. Ever ride a dirt bike? They don’t have skinny 29er’s, they are running big meats, that’s what e bikes should run.

Look where gravel bikes are now. They are slackened road bikes that fit mtb width tires and even have suspension now. Looks like john tomac’s dropbar mtb. I ride my road bike on pavement and gravel roads with 30mm road tires. If it gets to the point that it’s washboard or potholes a gravel bike does the same thing a road bike does and hops all over so mtb and road bike are all that are needed.

Oversized pulleys. GMAFB. $700 for 1watt savings.
I don't think that's an over-hype. 99% of us think it's the dumbest thing and that hype isn't aimed at us. It's aimed at that 1%. Or really .0001% that spends money in really dumb but profitable ways to those companies.

It's like $1,500 cranks for E-Bikes to save 20 grams or $3k jeweled cases for an iPhone. Normal people aren't the market.

You have different logic than 99% of us. Not a good or bad thing.

This is a fabricated lie, no one is WWing an ebike. I've done nothing but added weight. $1500 crank arms is for a poser!
Nobody? Not saying you fit into that camp but there's going to be a few people that do.

I've seen people on MTBNJ have bought those 5Dev crank arms. Somebody is buying those $$$ Cane Creek Titanium ones.

It's like the $700 derailleur pulley wheels. I don't ride with anyone who buys those but I've run across a few people on the trails with them. It's dumb but there's lots of dumb shit we all buy.

yes, and 2 dropper cables (i still havent made the jump to axs dropper, but i do carry a spare cable for it now)

Dropper I have as well. Good luck getting the actuator back and working well on if its a non-end cable actuator on the trail though. That's a PITA in a shop.

Shifter I find far more common in Shimano brifters with internal cable routing. I've never seen it in MTB but you seem to stress test your parts more than most.
