The DIY thread - DIYourself

It's a weird install. I think because of the vinyl siding. The two top hinge screws seem to go into nothing but an aluminum channel. It seem to me that it should have gone into the door jam somehow. I attempted a long screw and it just comes out the other side into the vinyl siding. I was thinking about trying to drill a hole at an angle towards the house and hopefully grab part of the door jam.
Have you tried a plastic molly or a toggle bolt?

So I’ve tightened everything as much as possible and it’s better but still missing the strike plate holes.

Would you lower the existing plate or try to modify the holes and make them a bit longer.

Pencil marks where it hits now. It was much worse before.

flip the plate over. meaning top goes to bottom.

I'm guessing that's a joke?

If i'm recalling correctly, the door is made to go in left or right hinged. And the plate is reversed cause the jamb is turned over.
there are also slots in the jamb, and the plate can slide up/down.

Maybe the slots are more appropriate here -

If he flipped the plate the holes would move way to much toward the bottom, from the picture showing the ruler I would say at least 2.5" lower. Also, the two holes have different dimensions so it's a no go in my opinion (but I did not see the actual door).

Agree.

Just move the plate.
Cut the plate
Or get the sag out of the door

?

Maybe the door was installed upside down....

If that door is anything like my storm door I don't think that installed upside down it would have ever close...I'm afraid there's no shortcut here, take the storm door frame down, see what actually is behind it and provide a sturdier piece of material where to fix the frame. Do it once and forget until next time it breaks...

School me about dishwashers-
The Whirlpool that came with our house 16 years ago may finally be dead.

I’ve been paying attention enough to know that Bosch is the brand, and the 300 series is tops on a few lists I’ve seen, for under $1k- a few hundred more gets you an 800 series, but I see lots of people here dropping $2-3k on a Bosch-

For those that have, what model are rocking and why not the cheaper ones?
Thanks

We recently acquired a 800 series, super happy with the purchase so far. Only issue with it is Bailey L. freaks out every time it's on, in spite of its operating in whisper quiet mode.

Not sure of the specific model, but I based the choice on the stellar reviews on this website...I would say pull the trigger on one.

Bosch 800 - no brainer. I think I can take credit for recommending it to @serviceguy too.

Our previous bosch DW lasted 18 years and I admittedly did no routine maintenance on it, nor did we ever have any problems with it until it just stopped working/cleaning/drying properly. No use even bothering to fix it at that point IMO it did its job and very well. We are a family of 5 and run it every other day.

We got it on sale at HD and had them come do the install. More impressive is when there was problems with my plumbing on the install (not the installers fault) they had an emergency plumber on call, and that guy showed up an hour later, fixed all the issues (bad valves under the sink and the house water supply), and then he completed the DW install. I was never so happy to pay an extra $350 in my life and he did a great job and everything got completed the same day.

But compared to my old Bosch DW this one is so quiet without the red light on that shines on the floor I can't even hear it.

One of the biggest things I was looking for was no heating element for drying. My old dishwasher didn’t have one, and I got spoiled not having to pay attention to keeping plastic out of the bottom. I can’t recall if the cheaper Bosh units had the element, but that might have been one of the factors. I do remember having a tough time getting mine in 2022 w/ supply chain BS so the 800 might have been the only option. I drove to a Best Buy warehouse near Baltimore to get it. Either way, no regerts. Best and most quiet dishwasher I’ve ever used.

They have air dry auto open as an runtime option now.

Replaced the two upper screws with ones that were much wider. Tightened every screw to the max. Lowered strike plate about 1/4" and all is good for now.

I don’t get the auto open thing. The one I have now works great with whatever it does (steam?) to heat and dry the dishes.

Yup, got the lowdown on that open air dry-
It’s their 500 series model.
@MrsManic liked that, I overruled as a failure point, noting no other brand is running with that.

800 series delivery tomorrow-
Thanks @serviceguy @iman29 @rlb

Note to anyone considering, Homies has them on sale in store until 11/5-
($100+ off their internet prices)

We went with local appliance store that met/beat HD sale price and free delivery and take away.
Kudos to @MrsManic for tracking that down, calling a salesperson like it was the 1980’s. lol

Can confirm: Bosch 300/500/800 do not have heating elements.
And a 300 is a perfectly fine unit in the line up, I wouldn’t have been disappointed if we landed there.

Lowe's typically carries cedar 1x material. Kuiken Brothers as well. Depending on where you're located, Wood Boards and Beams in Fairfield almost certainly does and, as a plus, that place is awesome if you're into woodworking at all.
